French born Antoine Jean Claude Brunin de Bolmar (1797-1861) settled in Philadelphia in 1828. To escape an 1832 cholera epidemic, Bolmar moved to rural West Chester outside Philadelphia and engaged in writing text books. In 1834 he was convinced to take over running the West Chester Academy, which went on to become very popular. In 1840 he opened a boarding school for young men and boys. This school, known as Bolmar's Seminary, became one of the most successful educational institutions in the state, which caused Bolmar to gain fame and students from all over the Western Hemisphere. The school was open until 1859. S&S/AI 573. PAIMP 23
