Butler 1836-1909 earned command of the 2nd South Carolina cavalry in August 1862 but soon after commanded a brigade and then a division under both Stuart and Hampton; following the war he served as a U.S. Senator from south Carolina 1877-1895. Shows some shelf rubbing at the extremities spine lightly toned front hinge neatly repaired otherwise the binding is strong and tight the text is clean and unmarked and the boards are bright and colorful. Charles Blockson notes that on its publication in 1941 THE NEGRO CARAVAN was "the most important single volume of Afro-American writing ever published" 58. Its three editors assembled some of the most influential pieces by Black Americans through the 1940s including songs plays narratives of enslaved people poetry essays folk literature and more. Each section is accompanied by a critical introduction contextualizing the pieces in their wider genres and in Black history. Announcement for the only film made by Ulises Carrión a structuralist 16mm performance in which Carrión cradles a television set playing scenes from Max Ophüls' The Reckless Moment 1949 and moves his body and the set according to the direction in which the camera pans in the film—right left down up—resulting in a strangely stabilized image. The performance abruptly concludes when Ophüls' protagonist throws the body of a gangster ex-art dealer into the sea. Amsterdam unknown
