1886236122New York: Charles L. Webster & Company 1886. First edition first printing deluxe issue. Publisher's deluxe three-quarter brown pebbled morocco over brown cloth decorated with gilt-stamped medallions marbled endpapers all edges marbled. Owner's penciled name both volumes front hinge vol. 1 split but holding strong light rubbing and scuffing to binding overall a near fine set. Frontispieces two tipped-in plates two facsimile letters and fold out map. Over forty additional maps throughout. Few presidential memoirs rival the literary and historical weight of Grant's. Composed during the final year of his life while battling terminal illness Grant wrote with urgency and remarkable lucidity. His unflinching narrative of the Mexican and Civil Wars drew quick praise for its candor and clarity. However Grant's fortitude to write was not fully self-imposed. It was his friend Mark Twain who encouraged Grant to finish his memoirs and entrust their publication to Charles L. Webster & Company which Twain co-founded. Issued in two monumental volumes by subscription the first edition sold over 200000 copies in its first year. The work not only secured the financial future of Grant’s family but also cemented his reputation as both soldier and author.

A near fine deluxe binding edition of the first two volumes of the "Shoulder Strap" series.

Dornbush II: 1986; Nevins II: 59. Grant a close friend of Sherman’s went on a “World Tour†after his second presidential term had ended. It has been suggested that Grant collected a few souvenirs for his dear friend while visiting Asia. When the Grant family returned from their trip Sherman greeted Grant at a reunion held by the veterans of the Army of the Tennessee. In good condition with handle missing. The piece measures 14.5 inches. General William Tecumseh Sherman and General Ulysses S. Grant were key figures in the Union Army during the American Civil War forming a close personal and professional relationship that significantly influenced the war’s outcome. Grant known for his strategic leadership recognized Sherman’s military talents early in the war and the two collaborated on major campaigns including the Vicksburg Campaign 1863 and Sherman’s March to the Sea 1864–1865. Their coordinated efforts exemplified the Union’s strategy of total war aimed at crippling the Confederacy’s resources and morale. After the war their partnership continued with Sherman succeeding Grant as Commanding General of the U.S. Army in 1869 when Grant became President. Their mutual trust and shared military philosophy played a crucial role in shaping U.S. military strategy and post-war reconstruction efforts. unknown

143753Mexico: Joaquín Mortiz 1970. First edition and only edition number 533 of 3000 copies of Carrión's second book a collection of six short stories employing the interior monologue by "perhaps Mexico's most important conceptual artist" Torre. Uncommon on the market: we were unable to trace any other copies for sale or at auction. Ulises Carrión 1941-1989 wrote De Alemania after his language and literature studies in France and Germany. In 1972 Carrión left Mexico and moved to Amsterdam where he founded the legendary Other Books and So bookstore and event space. He remains best known for his decisive role in defining and conceptualising the artistic genre artists' book through his manifest The New Art of Making Books 1975 "in which he extols the virtues of the book as a three-dimensional medium and convincingly refutes the idea of its being an accidental container of literature: 'A book is not a case of words nor a bag of words nor a bearer of words.' Arguing that if in the 'old art the writer writes texts . in the new art the writer makes books' Carrión urged writers and artists to take advantage of the possibilities that new printing technologies such as the mimeograph had to offer to bypass the market and to form alternate distribution networks by fostering communities of like-minded practitioners" Torre. Octavo. Original pictorial white wrappers printed in purple and black titles to spine and front cover in black and white. Extremities a little rubbed vertical creasing to spine the binding otherwise firm and unfaded slight spotting to top edge internally clean and fresh; a very good copy indeed. Following his studies in philosophy and letters at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México he spent time in France and Germany 1964-65 learning both languages. Warsaw: Galeria Remont 1976.

An extremely scarce exhibition catalogue published for Carrión’s first exhibition at Henryk Gajewski’s Galeria Remont. Gajewski b. 1948 the Polish artist and filmmaker founded this contemporary art space in a dormitory student club at the Warsaw University of Technology. The gallery operated from April 1972 to November 1979 hosting performance art exhibitions of photography stamp art and bookworks and many other events.

This catalogue contains the artist’s celebrated manifesto “The New Art of Making Books†which had been published for the first time the previous year in Plural no. 41 in Spanish and Michael Gibbs’s Kontexts nos. 6-7 in English. Galeria Remont became one of Carrión’s most important international connections in the vast network of collaborators he formed. Following this show he curated another exhibition at the Warsaw space — Inne Ksiazki 8-30 May 1977 — and gave lectures and performances there related to mail and stamp art.

Most of the text in the catalogue reproduces Carrión’s characteristic bold script. In a very frank artist’s statement he elucidates his pivot from Mexican literary wünderkind to avant-garde language artist: “After extensively publishing short stories and theater plays in Mexico U. C. began using language outside the mould of what is usually called literature. Since then rather than writing poems ‘in the form of’ an advertisement or a dictionary old literature under new masks he situates dictionaries phone-books ads or any other manifestations of language as autonomous structures. His aim is to reveal the beauty and richness of these structures regardless of their referential content. U. C. is still a writer — and he insists on calling himself such — who writes very little or doesn’t even write at all. This is a radical shift in attitude which enables U. C. to concern himself not only with verbal languages but also with any system of symbols he may come across. He presents such systems either in the form of a book or as a display on a wall.â€

A fine copy but for faint browning to the wrappers.

⧠Juan J. The type and size of the card holder suggests that the index cards record personal details. N.p.: Verlaggalerie Leaman 1978.

One of Ulises Carrión's scarce bookworks printed in an edition of 300. It is a fine example of the artist's interest in plagiarizing found texts in order to recast them as new original artworks and books. The artist has recreated the genealogy of the Muxlow family of Yorkshire whose family bible he discovered while he was studying at the University of Leeds. The birth dates marriages and death dates for the members of this family have been documented and preserved through the minimalist layout of the text.

Carrión lays out the intent of the present bookwork in this way: "The list of names dates and places divided in 5 sections: Parents Children Marriages Deaths and Other Events does not lend itself to lyricism it contains nothing more than facts. However when one reads names dates and places one after another these become interchangeable: individuality space and time united in one single flow of sounds become a pure rhythm a primitive chanting. And then again this rhythm composed of the most essential events of life brings us back to earth and ourselves."-G. Schraenen ed. Dear reader.
