Amsterdam: Pieter Brattinga Gallery 1981.<br/> <br/> One of Ulises Carrión’s rarest mail art projects with the original mailed envelope sent to the collector Tjeerd Deelstra b. 1937. As the artist intended explained below a small torn portion is not present.<br/> <br/> “In 1981 when the Print Gallery Pieter Brattinga invited Carrión to exhibit his work there Carrión thought of a response project in which he instructed participants to reconstruct in any way they desired the bottom half of an invitation which had been shredded. They were then to sign it and mail it back to the gallery. The lower section of the invitation included a definition of mail art which the artist had torn up and from which he had then removed a small fragment. This way the definition of mail art could never be reconstructed and the instruction given by the artist was impossible to accomplish. The project resulted in 243 responses in all sorts of formats; not only intervened letters but also objects. By making participants reconstruct the invitation the project had a cyclical component that was emphasized by having the word ‘feedback’ in its title. Assen Netherlands: 1982.<br/> <br/> The rare promotional poster for one of Ulises Carrión’s experimental public installations; the present copy is in particularly fine condition and has not been folded or creased. Entitled The Robbery of the Year this exhibition was designed by the artist as a test of visitors’ self-restraint. A large diamond was placed on a cushion without any enclosure but with a single spotlight trained on it in an otherwise dark room. Visitors were invited to enter the room while a photographer took pictures of the space and the visitors. An expected theft failed to transpire and near the end of the exhibition the photographer was withdrawn. Soon thereafter the diamond disappeared.<br/> <br/> “De Diefstal van het Jaar was an exhibition of a diamond in which visitors are surreptitiously invited to steal the stone raising interesting questions about viewing and stealing a precious object worthy of public exhibition and evoking images associated with museum heists with subsequent analysis on issues such as the value and ownership of objects on display.â€â€“Guy Schraenen ed. Die Jugend verbrachte S. v.a. in Chiavenna und Soglio. Nach Privatunterricht und Bildungsreisen studierte er 1745-46 in Basel Recht. 1755 begann er mit der Publikation von hist. polit. und ökonom. Schriften die auf aristokrat.-patriot. Gedankengut basierten. Die jurist. Arbeiten waren häufig Rechtsgutachten zu Auseinandersetzungen in den Drei Bünden sowie deren Souveränitätsrechten in den Untertanenlanden. Nach 1759 förderte S. die Einführung der Baumwollspinnerei im Verlagssystem; diese Initiative scheiterte ebenso wie die Seidenraupenzucht in Marschlins. Er war Mitglied sowie 1770-71 Präs. der Helvet. Gesellschaft und stand in engem Kontakt mit Isaak Iselin und Hans Caspar Hirzel. S. engagierte sich für eine Ertragssteigerung der Landwirtschaft und war 1778 Mitgründer der Gesellschaft landwirtschaftl. Freunde. Ende der 1770er Jahre betrieb er die Entsumpfung bei Castione im Veltlin. Im Sinne von Franz Urs Balthasar - dieser hatte die Einrichtung einer "Pflanzschule" für angehende Politiker beider Konfessionen gefordert - unterstützte er ab 1763 das von Martin von Planta 1761 gegr. Seminar in Haldenstein das 1771 nach Marschlins verlegt wurde. Nach dem Tod Plantas übernahm er vorübergehend die pädagog. Leitung und wandelte die Schule 1775 in ein Philanthropinum nach Basedow'schem Muster um. 1777 musste er das Institut aus finanziellen Gründen schliessen. 1749 besetzte S. erstmals eine Amtsstelle im Gericht der Vier Dörfer wo er später auch Landammann war. 1757-59 amtierte er als Podestà in Tirano. 1761-62 führte er die Gesandtschaft zur Erneuerung des Mailänder Kapitulats. Das Abkommen begünstigte die österr. Verkehrspolitik und die im Veltlin begüterten S. führte aber zu verstärkter Opposition gegen deren Hausmachtpolitik. Die Interessen der Fam. liessen sich im Tomilserhandel 1766 durchsetzen. 1768 erreichte S. zur Irritation der etablierten franz. Parteigänger seine Ernennung zum franz. Geschäftsträger meist "Minister" genannt bei den Drei Bünden. 1771-75 hintertrieb er gegen die österr. Interessen das Strassenprojekt Chiavenna-Nauders seines Hauptgegners Peter Conradin Constantin von Planta. Wohl auf Betreiben der Bündner Oppositionspartei der reformer. Patrioten verlor er 1792 den Geschäftsträgerposten und auch die Kompanie deren Inhaber er war. 1794 wurde er vor die Standesversammlung zitiert und nach seiner Flucht vom "Unparteiischen Gericht" als Vogelfreier verbannt. Der Anschluss des Veltlins an die Cisalpin. Republik 1797 brachte ihm grosse Verluste. Von seinem Landgut Eckbühl bei Höngg aus agitierte er gegen die Patrioten und den Anschluss Bündens an die Helvet. Republik. Im Sept. 1799 floh er nach St. Gallen und weiter nach Wien. S. war der einflussreichste Bündner in der 2. Hälfte des 18. Jh. Als Aufklärer im Sinne des aristokrat. Patriotismus leistete er Reformarbeit in Publizistik Ökonomie und Erziehung. Neben dem hochfliegenden Idealismus stand seine Tätigkeit als Realpolitiker. Der virtuose Diplomat führte das 3. Mailänder Kapitulat mit Österreich herbei um kurz darauf dessen Einfluss mit der Hinwendung zu Frankreich einzudämmen. Gleichwertig daneben stand für ihn die Stärkung des Hauses S. Die in den 1760er Jahren entstehende Opposition gegen die "Familienherrschaft" konnte sich erst im Gefolge der revolutionären Ereignisse durchsetzen die S. ins österr. Lager trieben» HLS. 010 o.
