Not by the OTHER U.S. Grant who lived in the adjacent northwest Illinois county Jo Daviess but by the noted Northwestern University geology professor surely named in his and William T. One page report cover inscribed by Grant "Wm E. Dodge Esq. New York N.Y. U.S. Grant Lt. Gen." Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to Lieutenant General of the United States Army on March 1864 a rank which had only previously been held by George Washington. Following Lincolns assassination in April of 1865 Grant became America's first four-star general and played an important role in aiding Congress in their effort to reconstruct the South. In near fine condition. With a first edition of the complete report which is in very good condition. Rare and desirable. As Commanding General of the United States Army 1864-69 Grant worked closely with President Abraham Lincoln to lead the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy in the Civil War. He implemented Congressional Reconstruction often at odds with Lincoln's successor Andrew Johnson. Twice elected president Grant led the Republicans in their effort to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism and slavery protect African-American citizenship and supported unbridled nationwide industrial expansionism during the Gilded Age.
