Dodds, Frederick Ahl, and John Peradotto, Griffith shows that Apollo is a constant, powerful presence throughout the play. He contends that although we can sympathize with Oedipus because of his sufferings, he is still morally responsible for murdering his father and sleeping with his mother. Apollo is therefore not indifferent and his actions are not unjust. Griffith focuses on Apollo's commandment "know thyself," a commandment Oedipus belatedly and tragically fulfils, to stress both the need for self-understanding in the study of ancient literature and the usefulness of ancient literature in achieving self-understanding. ; 160 pages

FONDO DI MAGAZZINO: PARI AL NUOVO Questo libro è un'esposizione sintetica del lavoro di ricerca svolto dall'autore dal 1950 a partire dall'analisi semantica del linguaggio schizofrenico. Ma la dimensione del linguaggio non rimane imprigionata nella psicopatologia: da un lato fluisce subito in una più generale ricerca antropologica e dall'altro lato impone la necessità di una prassi trasformazionale nella propria parte del campo antropico e nell'orizzonte del tempo che sopravviene. L'insieme delle ricerche s'è andata sempre più configurando come un tentativo di approfondimento e stravolgimento nel campo complesso e fluente di quelle che, senza proprietà alcuna, si dicono scienze umane: una svolta che risultò epistemologicamente alternativa e successiva rispetto alle concezioni prevalenti nell'ultimo tratto del novecento, ma anche confusa, paradossale, transitoria nell'andare a zigzag del discorso che parla dell'accadere umano, con l'oscillare da un estremo all'altro, con il rovesciamento dei piani della narrazione antropologica, con il carattere paradossale degli atteggiamenti proposizionali che la compongono. Questo è il significato della parola "diadromia" che fa da insegna alla fase più recente della ricerca dell'autore.
