Manuscript folio 11 3/4 x 8 5/8 in.; 300 x 220 mm. 58 tipped-in illustrations of which 24 are in full color some heightened in gold 5 in pen-and-ink 29 in pencil on tracing paper; some marginal soiling front endpaper torn a few drawings removed. Half blue calf gilt; binding professionally repaired edges and corners rubbed. Cecil B. DeMille bookplate his sale Christie's East 18 October 1988 lot 235 with presentation inscription by Josef Schildkraut dated 1935. Manuscript version from the library of Cecil B. DeMille given him by the film actor Josef Schildkraut. Jakob Hefner-Alteneck 1811-1903 director of the Bavarian National Museum in Munich published this collection of reproductions from medieval manuscripts and sculpture in a 3-volume edition Frankfurt: Keller-Beyerle 1840-1854. This is a manuscript copy of the first part of that work based on the Mannheim edition Lipperheide Ca5. The illustrations depict costume armor and courtly dress. DeMille's library was especially rich in illustrated books of historical costume and artifacts which he used as sources for costumes and props in his historical films. Schildkraut 1896-1964 appeared in some sixty films from 1915 to 1964 including the role of Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank1959.
