19744No place Dublin Ireland . 15 August no year . 1p. 4to. In fair condition aged and worn. The breaking open of the wafer has resulted in slight loss at the beginning of Maturin's signature. Addressed on reverse to 'William Spooner Esqre at Mr Millikin's Grafton Street'. His not writing of 'Dublin' implies that he is writing from the same place. Maturin was the great-uncle of Oscar Wilde who adopted the name 'Sebastian Melmoth' during his self-exile on the continent. A short but piquant letter reading: 'Dear Sir I enclose Sir Walter Scott's friendly letter - As authentic biography is more interesting than fictitious I will send you a memoir of my own family the events in which are as romantic as those in any tale with the advantage of being true - Sincerely yours <C.> R. Maturin August 15th.' No place [ Dublin, Ireland ]. 15 August [ no year ]. unknown

A 1836 reissue in the original cloth collecting three notable Gothic novels with altered pagination of this composite volume originally published in 1834 as vol. 41 in Bentley's series of Standard Novels. Discussions about publication of Vathek in this series were under way by early November 1833 but Bentley's decision to issue Vathek along with novels by Walpole and 'Monk' Lewis does not seem to have pleased Beckford who regarded the two other titles as 'trash'. The volume nonetheless made available to a wide-readership texts of Vathek and of The Castle of Otranto the two most celebrated fantasy romances of the later eighteenth century and it ran to three editions in all 1834 1836 1849. . 8vo.
