Good expansive signature ‘A Waterhouse’ and the letter written in a stylish hand. Addressed to ‘The Rev: H. W Sneyd Kinnersley’. He begins by stating that he ‘called at Aldin House this afternoon in the hope of seeing you’. Had he done so he would have ‘troubled you with a question about my little boy’s work. / I fancy that having risen in his place in the School he has missed somehow some of the Steps which he might have taken on his way to his present position.’ He asks SK to ‘point out to me in what you Consider him most deficient’ so that he can ‘get him to do a little work during the holidays to make him acquainted with what he has missed.’ 28 July 1874; on letterhead of Fox Hill, Reading. unknown

Alley then in partnership with Richard Lane the leading neo-classical architect of Manchester. In 1853 his education was completed with a ten-month tour of France Italy and Germany after which he set up in practice as an architect in Manchester.’ Waterhouse’s first success would come with his winning design for the Manchester assize courts in 1859. 1p 12mo. On the first leaf of a grey-paper bifolium. In good condition. Folded for postage. Addressed to ‘Thomas Haigh Esq:’ and signed ‘A Waterhouse’. Begins: ‘Dear Sir / The enclosed came this morning in an envelope addressed to me but has been evidently misdirected.’ He is sending off three drawings ‘completing the set of general drawings for house at Keston’. Original publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth lettered in gilt. Extremities marked lightly rubbed spine sunned. Early inked gift inscription to to additional engraved title. Upper hinges partially exposed endpapers discoloured one gathering O1-8 working loose and protruding slightly from text-block. A 1836 reissue in the original cloth collecting three notable Gothic novels with altered pagination of this composite volume originally published in 1834 as vol. 41 in Bentley's series of Standard Novels. Discussions about publication of Vathek in this series were under way by early November 1833 but Bentley's decision to issue Vathek along with novels by Walpole and 'Monk' Lewis does not seem to have pleased Beckford who regarded the two other titles as 'trash'. The volume nonetheless made available to a wide-readership texts of Vathek and of The Castle of Otranto the two most celebrated fantasy romances of the later eighteenth century and it ran to three editions in all 1834 1836 1849. . 8vo. The edifice displays the development of Gothic architecture from Early English to the Perpendicular Period.
