Ex libris nobiliare di Williams Henry Riggs, noto per esser stato un importante collezionista di armi e armature medioevali. Ottimo e fresco esemplare dell'edizione originale di questo romanzo, pubblicato dall'autore sotto lo pseudonimo di Louis Randol, parodia della moda del romanzo nero alla Anne Radcliffe, alla quale lo stesso autore offre la sua opera che indica come 'badinage'. Non solo, nella dedica sottolinea come nel titolo abbia voluto indicarsi come traduttore e non come autore. Nell'opera che riporta all'antiporta una immagine tratta dal romanzo della scrittrice inglese (L'Italiano), rientrano tutti i materiali mutuati da quest'ultima, mentre, in fine, sempre in chiave parodistica, troviamo un ampio 'Catalogue de romans nouveaux et anciennes'. Eusebe De Salverte fu autore di poesie, opere teatrali e testi politici. Implicato nel tentativo rivoluzionario del 13 vendemmiaio, fu condannato a morte in contumacia e, in seguito, scagionato.
