8vo., First English Edition, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; original red cloth, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly chafed at head and tail of backstrip (just affecting lettering at tail) and a little browned on (predominantly white) rear panel. The first English edition of the first English translation of the Danish novel 'Gengaeldelsens Veje', written by Karen Blixen (as Pierre Andrezel) during the Nazi occupation of Denmark in 1944. In the English edition the 'author' is provided with a plausible biography (and even a portrait photograph). He 'is described as a young Frenchman, born in Rouen 1915, and educated at Oxford where he wrote stories for English magazines…'. The rear fold-in nevertheless carries an advertisement for the third impression of Karen Blixen's 'Out of Africa'! With striking dustwrapper artwork by Michael Wickham. Very scarce, especially in this condition.
Book is in excellent condition, with lower corners of the covers bumped as the only flaw. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears. 240 pages with large, full color illustrations throughout in lavish display. Chapters include: Medieval & gothic, Age of princes, Competition & diversity Modern Tapestry, Contemporary masters, Tribal tapestry weaves, Buying and caring for tapestry, Tapestry collections, etc.
