This 1782 article written by Edward King serves as a sequel to his earlier work on ancient castles. King examines the architectural features defensive structures and historical significance of various castles including Lincoln Castle offering additions and refinements to his previous observations. The study covers castles such as Tonbridge Canterbury Conisbrough Peveril Clifford's Tower Tickhill Pontefract Newark Harewood Spofforth and Haddon Hall. King's work is notable for its detailed analysis of medieval fortifications particularly in relation to Saxon and Norman influences. Water stain to final fifty or so pages and plates in top quarter. An authentic print extracted from a larger volume. Not a reprint or reproduction but an original work in its own right. "This book is an attempt to gather together the historical resources relative to the castles figuring in the collection, and to present the results of my archaeological investigation , illustrated by early traveller's descriptions, by photographs of my own .... I have arranged the fortresses in the order as they fell to the armies of the Holy League in the campaigns of 1685-1792, ... In each chapter the fortress' history is recapitulated from its earliest known beginnings to its last military engagement, followed by an analysis of its architecture."
