Contemporary full vellum hand lettered to the spine owner's inscription "E. Howes" dated 1830 to the head of the title page occasional old manuscript marginalia the verso of the title page to the second part with a few lines of manuscript handwriting - likely 17th century a blank verso to the rear with later juvenile inscription and doodles - possibly late 17th or 18th century. Some worming to the lower margin most pronounced towards the end of the first part staining at intervals becoming more prevalent to the second half of the volume spine darkened with some marking to the boards. 'The Adventures of Hajji Baba' was later made into an American adventure film in 1954. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Light bumping to the extremities. An unusual copy with seven lithographs to volume II. Seven plates to volume II which is unusual as no illustrated editions of this work have been recorded. The plates resemble the style of the author's own illustrations as he was an amateur sketch artist. These sketches suggest an amandoned intention to issue an illustrated edition of this work. Bound without the half-titles. James Justinian Morier was a renowned British diplomat and author who entered the diplomatic service through the influence of his uncle Admiral William Waldegrave1st Baron Radstock. First visiting Iran in 1808 as secretary to Sir Harford Jones-Brydges Morier had an extensive career in the country and wrote several travel works of his experiences that were widely popular. This picaresque romance of Persian life was written after Morier retired from his diplomatic career in Iran. The work drew heavily on Morier's personal knowledge of Persia and its people that he had acquired on the British embassy staff at Tehran. The novel hence widely influenced English ideas of Persia and its Persian translation even led to the development of the modern Persian novel of social criticism.An unusual copy of this work in need of a sympathetic rebind. In a contemporary half calf binding. Externally worn. Loss to the backstrips of all volumes worse to volume III. Volume III is also lacking the bottom spine label. Spine is lifting to volume II. Bookplates of Coker Court to all FEPs binder's ticket to FEP of Vol. I scattered foxing. The first edition James Justinian Morier's 1782-1849 third published novel. Having pursued a career as a diplomat primarily operating in Persia Morier devoted his retirement to writing first producing two travel books A Journey through Persia Armenia and Asia Minor 1812 and A Second Journey 1818 which both met with critical acclaim. His major work the novel Adventures of Hajji Baba of Isphahan 1824 achieved immense popularity for its perceptive portrayal of Persian life. This was followed by three further novels based on his experiences in Persia including the Oriental romance. Henry Marsh Custard 1806-1895 originally ran a printing business at Parkstone Dorset but ceased printing there at the end of December 1838 and moved to Yeovil. By 1839 Custard was in partnership with William Porter as stationers and printers in Hendford. Porter & Custard printers remained in the premises until their partnership was dissolved in 1841. The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan is a satirical Oriental novel in English. It was written in 1824 by James Justinian Morier a former British envoy who lived in Qajar Iran in 1808–1809 and 1810–1814 amidst the diplomatic difficulties that the country had with European nations. It was followed by a sequel The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan in England in 1828.
