Atabey's collation calls for a half-title in the first work though this is lacking in the copy there described as well as the present copy and is not mentioned in Abbey's collation. 'In retirement Morier pursued the writing career which was far more to his taste than diplomacy and on which he had already made a start. His two travel books A Journey through Persia Armenia and Asia Minor 1812 and A Second Journey 1818 both met with critical acclaim and were welcomed by a public which knew little of these areas' ODNB. Having pursued a career as a diplomat primarily operating in Persia Morier devoted his retirement to writing first producing two travel books A Journey through Persia Armenia and Asia Minor 1812 and A Second Journey 1818 which both met with critical acclaim. His major work the novel Adventures of Hajji Baba of Isphahan 1824 achieved immense popularity for its perceptive portrayal of Persian life. This was followed by three further novels based on his experiences in Persia including the Oriental romance. Henry Marsh Custard 1806-1895 originally ran a printing business at Parkstone Dorset but ceased printing there at the end of December 1838 and moved to Yeovil. By 1839 Custard was in partnership with William Porter as stationers and printers in Hendford. Porter & Custard printers remained in the premises until their partnership was dissolved in 1841. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards vellum-covered corners to boards. Moderate rubbing to boards crease to upper corner of front board below vellum heavier rubbing to extremities corners bumped and somewhat worn spine perished revealing printer's waste dated 1822 boards partially detached but secure. Moderate toning occasional faint stains to margins. Text in neat hand occasional later annotations and a few doodles in same hand. $2500. With its careful arrangement and index this manuscript appears to be a fair copy of class notes on the first five books of Justinian's Code. The titles are in Latin the text in French. Based on class lectures the notes are paraphrases of each title. The later notes in the margins are clarifications or statements of main points. The first page has a large Roman numeral "I" which suggests the compiler had another notebook covering the rest of the Code Books 6-12. Also known as the Codex Justiniani the Code contains the laws in force during Justinian's reign. It is divided into 12 books. Book 1 deals with ecclesiastical law the sources of law and the duties of high officials. Books 2-8 deal with private law. Book 9 deals with criminal law. Books 10-12 deal with administrative law. It is one of the four components of the Corpus Juris Civilis. unknown books

Third and final edition. This well-respected edition is notable for its elegant parallel translation. Harris an advocate of Doctor's Commons provides an interesting historical introduction and notes that compare the rules of Roman and English law. The final section is a translation of "Concerning the Succession of Descendents" Book 118 of the Novels. This work was owned by many sophisticated lawyers in Great Britain and America such as Thomas Jefferson who owned a copy of the second edition.
