Handsome ALS 1p 4½" X 7" lined lettersheet Reading PA 31 August 1855. Addressed to General R.C. Hale Reuben Charles Hale 1812-63. Near fine. Boldly penned note attempting to obtain a position likely for a constituent. Reads in part: "Dr Donegan is very anxious in the changes that may be made in the Custom House to have a salary equal to an Inspectorship; Mr Brown is kindly disposed towards him; & if you could make a suggestion to him as to place & take an interest in him you wd confer a favor on him & on me." Hale served as quartermaster general of Pennsylvania during the war and was subject of J.C. Beckel's 1862 tune "Genl. R.C. Hale's Grand March." A nice example of congressional favor trading. unknown
