Combatiente de las tres guerras por la independencia de Cuba. Libró múltiples combates y sobresalió por su sólida formación militar adquirida de forma autodidacta. El león holguinero como lo nombraban nació el 4 de agosto de 1839 en la calle de San Diego provincia de HolguÃn. Participó en la >Guerra de los Diez Años la Guerra Chiquita y la Guerra Necesaria. Es considerado uno de los principales estrategas de las guerras de independencia cubanas. Prestó especial atención a la preparación de las tropas y al trabajo cohesionado del Estado Mayor asà como a la planificación detallada de las campañas y acciones combativas con el empleo de mapas y croquis y su dirección desde los puestos de mando.
