Es considerado uno de los principales estrategas de las guerras de independencia cubanas. Prestó especial atención a la preparación de las tropas y al trabajo cohesionado del Estado Mayor asà como a la planificación detallada de las campañas y acciones combativas con el empleo de mapas y croquis y su dirección desde los puestos de mando. Fue el jefe que más empleó la artillerÃa para la cual exigÃa dominar los conceptos técnicos y balÃsticos. Desarrolló el arte de sitiar y tomar ciudades y poblaciones además de atacar a grandes columnas enemigas.
