The subject of the 6th book Hypercriticus is much like the fifth Latin poetry and its goal is to give the budding poet examples which are worthy of imitation. There is a division into five eras: from the beginnings and Roman classicism to the decline during the Empire and late antiquity and then the revival after Petrarch. The normative judgmental aspect predominates which means that a historical approach as it is taken today was not yet possible. Of great significance is the 4th chapter which contains an overview of modern Latin poetry. Contained within a two-volume 12mo format the edition includes the full text of De Bello Gallico and Aulus Hirtius' continuation Bellum Alexandrinum. Of particular note are the four double-page engraved maps often separated from other examples but here fully intact. These cartographic plates are highly desirable among collectors of antique maps and Roman history. The publisher M. Ritchie & J. Sammells issued this volume in London despite the French text reflecting international scholarly exchange in the late 18th century. This particular edition was the second with Clarke's annotations. Julius Caesar's accounts of his campaign in Gaul and Britain between 58 and 50 BC and his description of his participation in the 49-48 BC Roman Civil War are accompanied by Clarke's observations.Illustrated with a frontispiece one folding plate and three folding maps.
