"The Prytaneion was a structure central to the civic life of the ancient Greek city-state. In it was housed the hearth of Hestia with its eternal fire symbolizing the well-being of the state. To it were invited distinguished foreign visitors for meals; citizens who had performed some special service to the state were also entertained there. The prytaneion was the 'home' of the state and the architectural manifestation of its life. The obvious ubiquity and importance of the prytaneion in antiquity is not reflected in the pages of modern scholarship, largely because only two structures have been excavated that can be firmly so identified. In this book Mr. Miller seeks to define the functions and the architectural form of the prytaneion by assembling and analyzing historical and epigraphic references to it. His analysis yields explicit references to various architectural parts of the prytaneion as well as a definition of the function of the building from which other architectural elements can be extrapolated. It provides a set of architectural elements essential to any prytaneion and usable as criteria of identification for excavated structures. Pascale Picard-Cajan a découvert les calques d'Ingres et ""a pu établir qu'Ingres avait décalqué presque toutes les planches de vases de Tischbein, de Millin et de James Millingen (1774-1845), lui permettant ainsi d'étudier les principes de composition générale et les attitudes de chaque figure et de réutiliser certains motifs pour ses propres œuvres."" "Shortly before the successful launch of the "Olympias" a reconstructed Greek warship, the first edition of "The Athenian Trireme" was published, providing historical and technical background to the reconstruction of the ship in a Greek shipyard. Since then 5 seasons of experimental trials have been conducted on the ship under oar and sail, and the lessons learned have been supplemented by historical, scientific and physiological research over the last 15 years. for this second edition the text has been recast and a number of substantive changes have been made in the light of the sea trials and new research. In addition there is an entirely new chapter which describes the trials of Olympias in detail, reports the performance figures obtained and outlines the changes which the authors would wish to incorporate in any second reconstruction. There are 19 new illustrations, including 11 photographs of Olympias at sea demonstrating features of the design which could only be represented by drawings in the first edition. 319p. illus.bibliography.index Book
