[Thomas Spencer Jerome Lectures] "The Rise and Fall of States According to Greek Authors is a masterful survey of the manner in which Greek historians, from Herodotus to Polybius, explained the conditions of a state's success and the dangers of power. Both the differences and the similarities among the major authors' ideas are carefully analyzed: the changing notions of excess, or hybris; the common stress on public morality; and the value of goodwill.." 100p. "The Prytaneion was a structure central to the civic life of the ancient Greek city-state. In it was housed the hearth of Hestia with its eternal fire symbolizing the well-being of the state. To it were invited distinguished foreign visitors for meals; citizens who had performed some special service to the state were also entertained there. The prytaneion was the 'home' of the state and the architectural manifestation of its life. The obvious ubiquity and importance of the prytaneion in antiquity is not reflected in the pages of modern scholarship, largely because only two structures have been excavated that can be firmly so identified. In this book Mr. Miller seeks to define the functions and the architectural form of the prytaneion by assembling and analyzing historical and epigraphic references to it. His analysis yields explicit references to various architectural parts of the prytaneion as well as a definition of the function of the building from which other architectural elements can be extrapolated. It provides a set of architectural elements essential to any prytaneion and usable as criteria of identification for excavated structures. This book is intended to serve both as a reference work for those interested in ancient civic life and civic architecture and as a guide to investigators of ancient cities still to be excavated."-258p.+ Plates,.illus bibliography index. "Shortly before the successful launch of the "Olympias" a reconstructed Greek warship, the first edition of "The Athenian Trireme" was published, providing historical and technical background to the reconstruction of the ship in a Greek shipyard. Since then 5 seasons of experimental trials have been conducted on the ship under oar and sail, and the lessons learned have been supplemented by historical, scientific and physiological research over the last 15 years. for this second edition the text has been recast and a number of substantive changes have been made in the light of the sea trials and new research. In addition there is an entirely new chapter which describes the trials of Olympias in detail, reports the performance figures obtained and outlines the changes which the authors would wish to incorporate in any second reconstruction. There are 19 new illustrations, including 11 photographs of Olympias at sea demonstrating features of the design which could only be represented by drawings in the first edition. 319p. illus.bibliography.index Book

"Within the space of three centuries, up to the great Persian invasion of 480BC, Greece was transformed from a simple peasant society into a sophisticated civilization which dominated the shores of the Mediterranean from Spain to Syria and from the Crimea to Egypt - a culture whose achievements in the fields of art, science, philosophy and politics were to establish the canons of the Western world. The author of this book places this development in the context of Mediterranean civilization, providing an account of the transformation that launched Western culture. ".. an insightful introduction to the world of ancient Greece from Homer to the Hellenistic Age" 250p. illus. index. As New Review copy Book
On a late September day in 480 B.C., Greek warships faced an invading Persian armada in the narrow Salamis Straits in the most important naval battle of the ancient world. Overwhelmingly outnumbered by the enemy, the Greeks triumphed through a combination of strategy and deception. More than two millennia after it occurred, the clash between the Greeks and Persians at Salamis remains one of the most tactically brilliant battles ever fought. The Greek victory changed the course of western history -- halting the advance of the Persian Empire and setting the stage for the Golden Age of Athens. In this dramatic new narrative account, historian and classicist Barry Strauss brings this landmark battle to life. He introduces us to the unforgettable characters whose decisions altered history: Themistocles, Athens' great leader (and admiral of its fleet), who devised the ingenious strategy that effectively destroyed the Persian navy in one day; Xerxes, the Persian king who fought bravely but who ultimately did not understand the sea; Aeschylus, the playwright who served in the battle and later wrote about it; and Artemisia, the only woman commander known from antiquity, who turned defeat into personal triumph. Filled with the sights, sounds, and scent of battle, The Battle of Salamis is a stirring work of history. Book
