Two rare editions of works by French humanist and classical scholar Marc-Antoine Muret 1526-1585. Widely celebrated for the elegance of his Latin prose style Muret first rose to prominence lecturing at the University of Rome having fled to Italy in 1554 after being condemned for sodomy and heresy. A highly competent textual critic he secured a favourable reputation throughout Europe primarily due to his Variae lectiones which contain annotations and expositions of many passages from ancient authors. His works were immensely successful being issued by a plethora of publisher's in innumerable editions across the Continent well in the eighteenth-century. Richard Heber 1773-1833 English landowner and bibliophile; a founding member of the Roxburghe Club Heber acquired books for his magnificent library which Dibdin estimated to have exceeded 100000 volumes by his death and dispersed over 216 days. They are drawn from the secret history of Sweden."". The approbation is signed by Father Richard and notes the sweet pleasure and amusement of this tale which follows in the footsteps of Cyrano. On the title page of Hau Kiou Choaan; or The Pleasing History 1761 Thomas Percy quotes from Jean-Baptiste Du Halde’s A Description of the Empire of China and of Chinese Tartary 1738: ‘There is no better means of instruction on China than letting China speak for herself’. It remains questionable whether by presenting an original piece of Chinese literature Percy has really let China ‘speak for herself’; it is reasonable to argue that Hau Kiou Choaan carries as much information about China as it does about Percy’s own perceptions of this country. Whether Percy’s works and views of China provoked louder criticism or higher praise his input into the studies of China was a positive one for it contributed to an increasingly vigorous debate that would increasingly perceive differences as a source of strength not weakness. This edition incorporated the text and revisions by the French humanist Marc-Antoine Muret 1526-1585 also known for his work on Cicero and Latin prose. Murets Seneca edition was first published by Grassium in Rome in 1585 marking an important moment of transition from the earlier editions of Seneca made by Erasmus in 1515 and 1529.These editions were followed in 1605 by an edition of Lipsius; in all these Senecan revisionary texts fit nicely into the arc of humanist contribution to moral philosophy during the early modern era. It is known Murets work provided the foundation for Montaignes reading of Seneca. Much to his misfortune Muret died a few months before the first edition of his Senecan commentary was ever published and never saw the editions of his work printed by Commelin or Sonnius. These posthumous editions all have careful additions to the preface by one
of Murets former students warning readers about the heresies within Stoic philosophy. This copy enjoyed a long life of scholarship at University centers in Madrid and later Liège as is evident through the marks of former library and university owners. Notably this copy
once belonged to the eminent 19th-century bibliophile Don Joaquin Gómez de la Cortina Marquis de Morante philologist and professor of University of Alcalá de Henares and rector of the University of Madrid. The Marquiss library has been hailed as the most extensive
private collection ever formed on the Iberian Peninsula. This copy retains the Marquiss fine binding of a smooth light brown calf and his noble coat of arms and legend stamped in gilt to both covers. The Gruter edition of 1592 is scarce; OCLC locates one in the US at
Harvard and only the 1594 at Columbia.
Ex typographeio Hieronymi Commelini hardcover

From the publisher: "This volume explores the tremendous influence of Platos Phaedrus on the philosophical religious scientific and literary discussions in the West. Ranging from Platos first readers over the Church Fathers and the Platonic commentators to Byzantine and Renaissance thinkers the papers collected here introduce the reader to the first two millennia of the dialogues reception history. Thirteen contributions by both junior and established scholars study the engagement with the Phaedrus by such major figures as Aristotle Galen Origen Clemens of Alexandria Plotinus Augustine Proclus Psellus Ficino Erasmus and many others. Together they cover the wide range of topics discussed in the dialogue: the value of myth and allegory religion and theology love and beauty the soul and its immortality teaching and learning metaphysics and epistemology rhetoric and dialectic as well as the role and the limits of writing. By placing the dialogue in this broad perspective the volume will appeal to readers interested in the Phaedrus itself as well as to classicists literary theorists and historians of philosophy science and religion concerned with the dialogues reception history and its main protagonists. Set in an Aldine italic with upright capitals with occasional words mostly names in roman and frequent passages in Greek. First edition to include Muret's important and influential commentaries of the poems of the passionate if self-centred Roman poet Catullus 84-ca. 54 BCE often given the collective title Carmina. Both the poems and the commentaries appear here in the original Latin. Poems 18 and 19 are addressed to the fertility god Pirapus best known for his enormous perpetual erection and poem 20 is also a Priapeia. Many are addressed to "Lesbia" whom Catullus passionately loved. He gave her this pseudonym in allusion to the Greek love poems of Sappho from the Island of Lesbos which influenced him strongly. She is generally identified as Clodia the wife of a Roman nobleman. Catullus was one of her several lovers and he names and rails against some of the others. While Catullus's greatest passions were heterosexual poems 48 50 and 99 express romantic and sexual interests in men. In his poems he is quick to attack others both politically and personally and after he fell out with two male friends he wrote poem 16 threatening to sexually abuse them. The French humanist Marc-Antoine Muret 1526-1585 recognised as a brilliant scholar in his teens taught at Paris from 1551 when he published his first book there. Accused of being a Huguenot and a homosexual he had to flee Paris in late 1553 but Adus Manutius's son Paulus who had taken charge of the family's Venice printing office offered him shelter. The present book was Muret's first publication in Venice. With minor damage to the lower outside corner of the first few leaves not approaching the text but still in very good condition. 1555000865Dégagnac France Lot. Very Good. 1555. On offer is a fascinating handwritten medieval French manuscript book earliest date 1555 with entries through 1597 in original blindstamped calf with small Fleur-de-lis. This stunning book has approximately 300 pages of handwritten entries being a register of acts properties transactions loans personal notes and journal entries the majority concerning Marc-Antoine Hébrart a noted merchant in the village of Dégagnac in Lot in south-western France. Most certainly Jewish it is evident that the Hebrart family was one of the largest land-holding families in the area. "In 1504 and 1505 the two "headmen" of the village Antoine Hebrart and Pierre Peysson together accounted for 15 percent of the land of the village" Ref: By Le Roy Emmanuel and Ladurie John Day The Peasants of Languedoc . A pencil annotation indicates that Marc Hébrard was of Jewish origin. A fairly cursory examination of the manuscript lends no additional support to this assertion but it is possible given the history of the Jews of neighboring Languedoc and the fact that some Jews remained in France under Christian-like assumed names after their expulsion in 1306. The generic 'Marc-Antoine' is cited as a Jewish name in Sara Uckelman's "Jewish Given Names Found in "Les Noms Des Israélites en France."
