Paper over front hinge split but hinge still secure penciled ownership signatures on front free endpapers occasional penciled annotations in the margins. Binding sound all maps in excellent condition. After serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Mexican War James S. Calhoun 1802-1852 was appointed federal Indian Agent for the newly acquired territory of New Mexico of whihch he became Governor in 1851. In addition to his correspondence from this time this volume includes brief biographical details and an account of how these papers came to be published so belatedly. The maps are: 1 Sketch Map prepared by Calhoun in 1849 suggesting localities for Indian agencies; 2 Map of New Meixco with Pueblos as noted by Calhoun 1850; 3 Map of the Territory of New Mexico Compiled by Bvt. Chardon's journal offers a window into the daily life of a fur trader during the golden age of the American fur trade with insightful description of the Native Americans of the area primarily Mandan but also the Arikaras and Yanktons.
