A New and Improved Edition from the London edition of 1819 with a translation of such notes and quotations as are not rendered in the text and the reduction of the various denominations of coins weights and measures to those of the United States. Illustrated with engravings of Egyptian antiquities &c. And a complete set of ancient geography. Boston: Printed and Published by Samuel Walker Harlem PLace No. 29 Newbury Street. 1823. Engraved title-page in each volume; illustrated with 16 engraved plates and 7 engraved maps some are folded. Two quarto volumes: 614li624 pp.; 212630 pp. Nineteenth century full calf black labels and gilt decoration at spine marbled endpapers. In v. 2 two ink ownerships on the the verso of the engraved title have been crossed through and one has been excised from the title-page leaving a hole near the title. Almost all plates show light to moderate foxing; a few plates have marginal tears or dampstaining; one plate is torn with loss. The maps are generally clean; one map is detached. The paper quality is very good overall despite some sections which have browned and are foxed. In v. 1 two leaves E2 & 3B are torn and missing text and the final free endpaper is missing. The bindings are very edgeworn and scuffed with joints starting. Volume 1 shows loss at heel and crown. A serviceable set but offered with all faults. Of interest but not pertaining to the historical subject is a misogynous poem "The Bachelor's Soliloquy" which is laid-down in v. 1. Written by the Bard of Tower Hall and meant to be a droll advertisement for Bennet's Tower Hall Clothing Bazaar it has several stanzas about the dangers of choosing a bride due to the vanity and cupidity of women and the general expense of keeping one. It is followed by a note also in verse from the bard proclaiming fond love for "ladies fair" but ends with the following couplets: Then ladies and gents if you'll regard / The facts I have been naming / We shall have no need of Lucy Stones / On woman's rights declaiming. unknown books

Charles Rollin January 30 1661-December 14 1741 was a French historian and educationist. He was born at Paris. He was the son of a cutler and at the age of twenty-two was made a master in the CollÃ¨ge du Plessis. In 1694 he was rector of the University of Paris rendering great service among other things by reviving the study of Greek. He held that post for two years instead of one and in 1699 was appointed principal of the CollÃ¨ge de Beauvais.<br/>Rollin held Jansenist principles and even went so far as to defend the miracles supposed to be worked at the tomb of FranÃ§ois de Paris commonly known as Deacon Paris. Unfortunately his religious opinions deprived him of his appointments and disqualified him for the rectorship to which in 1719 he had been re-elected. It is said that the same reason prevented his election to the AcadÃ©mie franÃ§aise though he was a member of the Academie des Inscriptions. Shortly before his death he protested publicly against the acceptance of the bull Unigenitus.<br/>Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life when he had been forbidden to teach. His once famous Ancient History Paris 1730-38 and the less generally read Roman History which followed it were avowed compilations uncritical and somewhat inaccurate. But they instructed and interested generation after generation almost to the present day. A more important work was his TraitÃ© des Ã©tudes Paris 1726-31. It contains a summary of what was even then a reformed and innovative system of education advocating a more frequent and extensive use of the vulgar tongue and discarding the medieval traditions that had lingered in France.
