1919409567Arizona 1919. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto. Measuring 11¾" x 7". String-tied flexible full leather wallet-style album with snaps. Containing 260 black and white gelatin silver photographs inserted into corner mounts nearly all captioned in white album ink. Most photos measure between 3"x 3" and 3" x 5" with about 15 smaller images. Album very good minus with moderate wear losses to back strip and large tears to the foldover; internally fine with one photo lacking and a few with minor fading. <br /> <br /> A splendid collection of photos put together by a young man using a print process that created razor sharp images. A large portion of the photos were taken in and around Winslow Arizona but there are several photos of other trips in the West: California New Mexico and Colorado as well as a few of trips to New York and New Jersey.<br /> <br /> In addition to Winslow other locations from the early days of Arizona statehood are shown including Sunshine the Blue Ridge Reservoir Flagstaff Horseshoe Bend and various other small towns. Pictures include a lumber mill numerous mines a Native American School frolicking at the swimming hole a Navajo Trading post and every variety of majestic scenery. There are snow scenes desolate railway stations even a British tank loaded on a train car. 13 wonderful photos are devoted to a Liberty Loan parade. There are plenty that show ranch life including time spent on the Quayle Ranch with several images of Charles Quayle who was shot and killed by a forest ranger a couple of years after the photos were taken.<br /> <br /> Of the Arizona images a fair amount depict posed family and friends. These rarely interest us but many in this album combine regional clothing with the spirit of the first descendants of pioneers in a way that seems curiously prescient of images that would emerge from the Dust Bowl a decade and a half later.<br /> <br /> Among the small complement of Southern California images are a couple of stellar shots of downtown Los Angeles and the Long Beach Pier. The East Coast images set in New Jersey include several views of New Brunswick and ice skating in Milltown. The New York images include several of large ships on the Hudson River.<br /> <br /> An arrestingly composed album with an unusual number of exceptionally nice photos created by a talented amateur photographer. unknown

191248425Cleveland OH & Boston MA: The White Company; n.d. ca 1912/1913. ca 1912/1913. A marvelous dealer's showroom photograph album for White Company automobiles and trucks with original 45 linen-backed silver gelatin images depicting models before World War I including roadsters touring cars limousines and 3/4 to 5 ton trucks owned by assorted companies together with original White Company badge. Photos measure 5" x 7" and nearly all with printed White Co. product labels on verso printed in red and black and all on linen hinges. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" in contemporary limp calf post-binder with title The White Company stamped in gilt on front cover. Nickel-plated screw-posts at gutter margin and with a dittoed label on front pastedown for Boston Branch. This remarkable salesman sample dealer's album for the White Motor Co. in Cleveland Ohio provides an excellent photographic resource of many different White motor cars & trucks produced a few years before World War I. Many of these images incorporate the various Company logos and advertising promotional material for the firms which had purchased them for their fleets. Although the White company had originally built White Steamers by 1911 they had largely moved to producing gasoline powered cars with 4- and 6-cylinder engines in 40 horsepower and 60 horsepower along with heavy trucks and commercial vehicles. 1912 was the year that White introduced their 6-cylinder engine into many different models including their G-F-R 60 H.P. Roadster $4800 G-F 60 H.P. 7 Passenger Touring $ 5000 as well as several fitted with 30 & 40 horsepower 4-cylinder engines including coupe touring car and even their Berline Limousine. During this period The White Co. was heavily marketing their automobiles with standard equipment of electrical starting and lighting system targeted towards "the woman who drives" featuring simple controls and flexible speed and touring radius of the gasoline automobiles. These images include a 3/4 ton G-B-E 30 H.P. Standard Express 1 1/2 ton G-T-B 30 H.P. Standard Express for such companies as B.F. Goodrich American Ship Building Co. and Pabst Brewing Co. in Milwaukee WI; 5 ton G-T-C 40 H.P. for the City of Pittsburg Dept. of Supplies; 3/4 ton delivery trucks for Marshall Field Joseph Horne and McGreery. They also produced specialty dump trucks tanker trucks and other truck bodies. In 1917 they would secure the contract from the Yellowstone Park Transportation Co. for their touring cars and motor buses painted yellow with drivers known as "Gearjammers" which were popular features in the Parks. The White Motor Company also owned the truck manufacturing names of Sterling Autocar Diamond T and REO which continued up through the 1970s. Their buses became especially well known in the 1930s when their Model 706 buses carried passengers throughout the major National Parks such as Yellowstone Yosemite and Glacier in the west and were called Red Jammers. Gettysburg National Battlefield still operates two of the White buses. The Boston Branch at 320 Newbury St. appears in trade literature as early as 1907 and by 1908 had managed to convince Mary Baker Eddy to own a Steam Touring Car with 30 horsepower and was enjoyed by her staff as Eddy only rode in it once preferring her horses and carriage. Also includes is an original White Company grille badge. Badge has damage to left side with a part of the "W" broken off. Minor bowing to covers. Some curling to fore-edges rubbing thumbing soiling foxing on versos to linen some soiling at fore-edges of images couple images with partial damage & lifting. Still a good copy. The White Company; n.d. [ca 1912/1913]. unknown

BEAUTIFUL COPY OF ROLLIN'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE TEACHING AND STUDY OF "BELLE LETTRES" A CLASSIC OF 18TH-CENTURY PEDAGOGY PRINTED BY MARIE-ANNE GUYARD ESTIENNE WIDOW OF JACQUES ESTIENNE THE ELDER. SHE ACHIEVED GREAT SUCCESS IN LATER YEARS THROUGH HER INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS ACUMEN. <br /> <br /> Marie-Anne Guyard a.k.a. Guiard was the daughter of a wine-merchant. In 1714 after the death of her first husband Charles-Francois Pochard metal merchant she married the successful printer-publisher Jacques Estienne. Upon his death in 1731 she continued the press and publishing operations located on the rue Saint-Jacques "a la Vertu". The present 4-volume set of Rollin's teaching and study guide was followed two years later by a 16-volume set of Rollin's "Histoire romaine" 1738-1748. From 1743 onward she worked in partnership with her eldest son Jacques the Younger to whom she sold 1/3 of the business for 110000 livres according to IRHT -- a colossal sum in those days. They were joined in 1750 by her second son Robert to whom she also sold 1/3 of the business for the same amount. According to a contemporary report by 1752 she was "a very rich woman for whom M. Rollin made a fortune on account of all the works of his that she printed. Abbe Antoine Pluche also contributed. She has just bequeathed and sold her business to her son and to Bauche's son." Marie-Anne Estienne died on May 13 1753 leaving her children a large estate. As stated above her two sons became printer-publishers; two of her four daughters married printer-publishers one married a bourgeois merchant and one married Daniel Coffin conseiller du Roi.<br /> <br /> Included herein are two priced lists of "Livres nouvellement imprimes" by her the first in vol. The photographer has captured the depth of sleep during REM phases of teenagers in Germany France Israel Switzerland and the US in their own bedrooms. The immediacy of the state of these young people while asleep so clearly illuminated in the photographs also speaks of the contrast between the adolescent compulsion to move about and complete relaxation. 1748H4EC6J1929WLParis 1748. 12mo. printed for the widow of Estienne & her children and the Estienne brothers by the widow of F.A. Quillau and the widow of Simon Contemporary mottled calf richly gold-tooled spines and binding edges marbled edges; only volume 11 bound as 2 volumes with slightly different tooling mottling and title-labels; all unobtrusive differences making a closely matching set. With 3 engraved maps 2 engraved folding plates and 1 engraved folding plan. 13 volumes bound as 14. ca. 600 pp. per volume Lovely set in the original French of Rollin's very popular Histoire ancienne which contrary to its full title primarily describes ancient Greece the other ancient peoples are only treated in the first two volumes. It's a mixed set from three editions published by the Estienne family in nice closely matching bindings. After the first volume appeared in 1730 the series grew well beyond its initially planned five volumes and became tremendously popular appearing in numerous editions and translations well into the 19th century. Rollin organised a narrative closely based on a wide variety of ancient sources. While this copying was heavily criticized Rollin also distinguished himself with his concern for moral issues. "The prominent lens through which Rollin viewed history was that of virtue corrupted by power and this was the main approach that he tested in his Greek history. In the process moreover he carved and unprecedented space for Greek antiquity" Lianeri. The set is in very good condition with a few leaves browned and a few minor spots and stains. The binding only have some minor wear along the extremities and are also in very good condition.l Brunet IV col. 1360; Graesse VI p. 151; cf. A.
