Harington Bart. The whole fully detailed within.' Inside the cover in small print are the 'General Conditions of Sale'. Two full-page advertisements with a third on the back cover. White label 'ON VIEW' stuck to front cover. 392 3 lots fully priced in manuscript for the proprietor with the firm's stamp and a signature dated from 'The Exchange Calcutta 24th. February 1912'. An interesting and evocative piece of Raj social history itemising the property of a judge who was selling up before retiring to England. The first item is 'A CURRY Stone with muller' '-/8/- lot' and Item 392 'a Salamander' '3/- lot'. The last three lots unnumbered are 'a Standard Square Pianoforte by Schiedmayer and Soehne Stuttghart in mahogany case resting on four supports' '125/- lot' 'a teakwood morocco covered revolving Music Stool' '10/-â€-' and 'a Chubb's Fire-resisting Iron Safe with key … on teakwood stand' '115/-â€-'. Addressed on reverse of second leaf with Dupont-Duterte's red wax seal broken in two to 'Monsieur Celerier Lieutenant de <> Mr Plaisant administrateur des travaux publique'. He begins by asking the two men 'de vouloir bien faire ensorte que mon pauvre jeune homme dont on est content ne quitte pas son attelier et ne passe du Coté du Faubxbourg St Antoine ou il est pus connu etant ne dans ce quartier'. In the second paragraph he discusses getting the lad 'de la ville quelques chemises dont ils manque absolument'. He concludes by stating that his aim is to 'montrer aux hommes de cette espece qu'ils ne faut pas desesperer de soi même et de la Bonté des autres hommes lorsqu'on revient a l'honnêteté'. Docketed at the head of the page: 'Repondre par le change que je lui donnerai trois chemises et qu'il peut me l'envoyé <>'. 19279On letterhead of the 'Judges' Chambers' 'Supreme Court Gibraltar.' Dated by Harington 'Gibraltar 18 May 1901'. 10pp. 8vo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn on ten leaves held together with a brass stud. With a number of deletions and emendations. The first paragraph reads: 'Rex v Alvarez Rex v Galliano This was an application by the Attorney General acting on the instructions of the British Minister in Morocco that certain dies a punching machine & a quantity of <> partly in dies partly in rolled plates & partly in ingots found in the possession of the prisoners respectively should be delivered up to the Government of Morocco - the application purporting to be founded on S27 of 24 & 25 Vict c. 99. The prisoners being convicted plus undergoing their sentence had no more standing before the Court nor had they instructed counsel but Mr Ballon who defended Galliano at his trial was heard as amicus curiae & raised the question .' After going into the details of the case Harington concludes: 'On the whole I am of opinion that I have no power to make any order in the matter except to direct as I do that the articles in question shall remain in the charge of the police unitl otherwise disposed of in due course of law.' Early on in the judgment he elaborates: 'In this state of things it appears to me clear that the only persons who can claim them under S27 are the Officers of Her majesty's Mint or the Solicitor to Hks Majesty's Treasury or some person authorised by them to receive them. The learned Attorney General was not in possession of authority from either the one or the other - nor was there any evidence that the abstruction called the Moorish Government the Sultan of Morocco as an individual or any person representing him was in possession of any such authority.' Gatty's annotations are of interest considering his legal standing in Gibraltar and his position as one of the Library's committee members. One: 'Report'. Two pages on the versos of a 4to bifolium. Very good on lightly-aged paper. Concerning the proposed 'establishment of a Club' within the Library and concluding 'Generally we are of opinion that the above scheme is the best that can be suggested for upholding both institutions - the Library and the Club. The proposed agreement i may appear at first sight to entail a loss on the Library but the loss it would suffer from the establishment of a Club outside would probably be far heavier .'. Signed in type by Major-General F. Carrington; W. H. Rathborne; Stephen H. Gatty C.J.; Herbert Marsh R.N.; L. Barnes-Lawrence; and Joseph A. Patron. Addressed on reverse to 'His Honour S. H. Gatty Esqr Chief Justice'. Attached at the head of the first page is a 12mo leaf with one page reproducing the third and twentieth of the 'Fundamental Laws'. Two pages annotated by Gatty and with several passages amended by later printed leaves being laid down on them.
