Application for Permission to Renounce United States Nationality with Unused Cover Letter

19443153Newell Ca: November 1944. Very good. 13pp. mimeographed forms printed on rectos only. Minor wear small paper clip rust stains to top edges. A cover letter datelined "November blank 1944 Newell California" intended to accompany the attached blank version of the actual application intended for use by Tule Lake internees wishing to renounce their United States citizenship. The cover letter is pre-addressed to the Attorney General and Edward J. Ennis the director of the Justice Department's Alien Enemy Control Unit in Washington D.C. The form letter begins "I wish to renounce my United States nationality in accordance with the recent government promulgation so I am enclosing a typewritten copy of this application form executed by me." A blank copy of the application is included here numbering three pages. The application includes a renunciation statement intended to be signed by applicants followed by ten questions pertaining to the applicant's history of birth residence last point of entry into the U.S. close relations education military service Selective Service classification and a declaration that the applicant has given "true and correct" answers intended to be dated and signed at the end. Tule Lake became the holding center for Japanese American internees viewed as disloyal after the issuance of the infamous loyalty questionnaire in the summer of 1943. These "disloyal segregees" were sent to Tule Lake where they suffered ostracization from fellow internees poorer living conditions inferior food and harsher treatment from American military guards among other indignities. There were even disagreements among the segregated internees as some of them truly wished for repatriation to Japan and identified as Japanese while others viewed this group as disloyal and undeserving of assistance or relief. In other words not only were these internees seen as disloyal by their own government but also by some of their fellow internees. Their feeling of dislocation ran deep. Eventually many of these segregees sought to renounce their American citizenship and repatriate to Japan. The present forms were many internees' first step in this process. November unknown

Legal document entitled: In the Matter of - The King vs. Roxuichi Yoshioka Charged with the Murder of his Wife Hisa Yoshioka on or about the 24th Day of June 1917 at his place of Residence on a Fox Ranch Situate in the Yukon Territory on the West Side of the Yukon River Opposite Dawson in Said Territory.

1917144634Dawson: Judge Macalulay 1917. Folio. 18 pages of hand corrected typescript on light gray paper. A bit soiled but overall clean and not brittle. Two pages of folio hand written notes in Justice Macaulay's hand. Three smaller pages of hand written notes towards the end. Signed in a hand I cannot make out. The whole bundle held together with the original paper clip. Included with the bundle is a long typed transcript of an article entitled "The Flowering Stump" by Vernon La Chance published in Maclean's in 15 October 1933 Macaulay was a Judge of the Territorial Court Dawson. He was elevated to the Bench in 1902 and preceded over the Court in the Yukon Territory for 39 years. This document provides Macalulay's report on the trial and appeal of Rokuichi Yoshioka a Japanese born Dawson fox farmer. He was accused tried and convicted of the crime by a jury. The trial was 6 days long after which the accused was convicted and hanged on the 23rd of November 1917. I am not sure what happened with the appeal. Although not a Gold Rush item certainly a very interesting document related to a murder in Dawson City. It must have been sensational and a major event in Dawson. Constable Stallworthy of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police was the investigating officer and provided testimony during the trial. Over the years I have had a number of primary source documents like this but nothing for Dawson and only one other murder before. This document or another copy was addressed To The Honorable The Secretary of State for Canada in Ottawa. Usually documents like this do not survive. Unrecorded 1601 ordinance from Salamanca enforcing the Armada-era servicio de millones Spainâ€™s foundational fiscal levy. Printed ordinance issued by the municipal council of Salamanca implementing the royal tax known as the servicio de los dieciocho millones. In accordance with the royal cÃ©dula of 9 February 1601 the Concejo Justicia y Regimiento instructs subordinate towns and villages to collect an eighth part of all wine and olive oil sold to be remitted through a chain of local receivers. The text regulates how wine and oil must be measured recorded and taxed forbids additional repartimientos and orders prompt transfer of funds to the cityâ€™s main treasury. Dated at Salamanca 10 March 1601 and naming four municipal commissioners appointed for its execution it represents the earliest stage of local enforcement of Philip IIIâ€™s fiscal scheme transforming the national levy into a functioning municipal excise. A contemporary handwritten endorsement below the text signed by Diez de la Puente attests its execution. Accompanying the printed ordinance is a contemporary manuscript headed on p. 3 â€œDudas que se ofrecen en la administraciÃ³n de las sisasâ€ listing practical questions concerning the execution of the taxâ€”registration and measurement of goods roles of administrators and receivers form of payment penalties and conditions of tax farming arrendamiento. The servicio de los dieciocho millones formed part of the broader system of millones taxes created by the Cortes of Castile to meet the Crownâ€™s desperate financial needs after the prolonged wars of Philip II. The servicio de millones had first been introduced by royal request and approved by the Cortes on 4 April 1590 conceived to raise eight million ducats over six years to finance the royal expenditure associated with the Armada campaign against England and other military commitments. Rather than remaining temporary it evolved into a regular levy on six staple itemsâ€”wine oil vinegar meat soap and tallow candlesâ€”collected through local sisas and eventually forming the backbone of Castileâ€™s fiscal structure. By 1600â€“1601 under Philip III the scheme was renewed and expanded to eighteen million ducats its collection entrusted to municipal governments such as Salamancaâ€™s Concejo Justicia y Regimiento. As described in BartolomÃ© Yun Casalillaâ€™s Sobre la transiciÃ³n al capitalismo en Castilla this marked a transition from feudal income to a centralized fiscal system financed through municipal taxation embedding local economies within the machinery of the Habsburg war state. The present ordinance captures this process of consolidationâ€”when the monarchy sought tighter control over municipal revenues demanded proper accounting and remittance of surpluses and aimed to prevent arbitrary over-taxationâ€”reflecting both the fiscal strain and administrative centralization characteristic of early-seventeenth-century Spain. First edition thus of this exceedingly scarce sales promotional catalogue for the General Jumbo Balloon Tire issued just as the country began the descent into the Great Depression. The oversize pneumatic tires developed by General Tire were first used on Ford Model T trucks and Ford Model T’s but quickly proved their durability and by the end of the 1920’s were the fastest selling truck tire in the United States. These excellent photo images provide not only references for the many companies that General Tire supplied but also the tremendous range of truck manufacturers and commercial advertising many companies sported during the 1920’s - 1930’s. Truck brands depicted in the album include REO Speedwagon Mack American-LaFrance White Wichita Fageol & more. Businesses ranged from Hemingway Bros. a moving company in Providence RI to Franklin Ice Cream Co. in Minneapolis MN along with bread trucks tankers cement mixers and others. Founded in 1915 General Tire & Rubber grew quickly adding plants in Texas Kentucky Ohio & North Carolina eventually expanding into aerospace defense contracting entertainment tennis ball production and plastics.
