199166957Claremont CA: Scripps College Press 1991. First Edition. An edition of 85 copies was printed on nine colors of acid-free Passport text and was bound in a spine-laced paper wrapper. Sewn printed wraps; square 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.; unpaginated. Six poems each accompanied by a biography of the author and an addendum printed on paper in various colors. Signed by the 21 people involved in the making of the book including the poets: Richard Barnes John Hollander Richard Howard Donald Justice Robert Mezey and Rosanna Warren the poets' signatures on a sheet at the rear. A Fine copy erratum slip bound in.

Six poets were invited by the Scripps College Humanities Institute to give poetry readings over the period of a year. Students in a Typography class directed by Kitty Maryatt at Scripps College asked each of the poets to allow them to print an ekphrastic poem; that is a poem inspired by a work of art. Students worked in teams to produce a book of these poems with either the original image that inspired the poem or new imagery. Both the Fall 1990 and the Spring 1991 typography students produced this book.

Well-represented as are all the press's projects in institutions through subscription; quite scarce in the marketplace. Although the press's works under longtime director Maryatt are always elaborate and usually signed by those involved in the production they are usually done over one semester. This particular undertaking involved two semesters of students and is signed by well-known poets which is unusual. Scripps College Press unknown
