1988011761London: Macmillan 1988. 1st edition. Page edges midly age darkened lightly soiled else fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. INSCRIBED COPY. Very brief inscription at title page. "Trow has made a fine art of taking Conan Doyle's much maligned Inspector Sholto Lestrade and making him the protagonist of a witty series. In the spirited albeit corny opening scene to his latest adveture the accident-prone Lestrade survives a fall from the upper deck of the Titanic as it is slipping out to sea. "Was it the weight of his moustache The cut of his bowlerAsomething had caused the crosswinds to catch him and he plummeted over the side." Lestrade spends the remainder of the book battling crime and the wheelchair he's confined in almost equal measure. His recuperation from a broken leg is less painful than it could have been thanks to the tender care of his fiance Fanny Berkeley the daughter of his old friend Chief Constable Tom Berkeley. Upon Lestrade's arrival at the Berkeley estate the first murder of his convalescence practically lands in his lap when the constable's butler is killed in an apparent hunting accident. Lestrade believes someone is out to kill the constable and his uneasiness sharpens when he receives a disturbing anonymous letter. Lestrade's investigation starts a long and complicated chain of events that leads into his past as he tries to get a handle on rapidly unfolding current events which turn out to have everything to do with his own life. He confronts some uncomfortable truths about himself but the darker insights are balanced by slapstick and uninhibited puns and wordplay in a winning well-crafted puzzler that offers sophisticated plotting and a playful look at Edwardian manners." -- Publishers Weekly. Front endpaper has 4 small tape remains of what looks as if it once held a photo else a near fine copy in near fine dust jacket price clipped. William Lush is a drunk and wife-beater and having savagely assaulted his wife he drives from his sheep station to the nearby town for a bender. On his return he runs out of petrol on the main road and walks to his farmhouse to get more. But he has beaten Jill's mother one to many times and Jill is waiting with a rifle for him to come back home. The doors and windows are locked and barred and when he discovers he can't get into the house he takes an axe to the offending front door. Jill fires a warning shot into the ceiling and then fires at the door when Lush spews abuse and the axe hits the door again. The night goes quiet and Jill expects to find Lush injured or dead outside the door come morning. But there is no sign of him the next day. And when Jill's mother dies from her injuries the police become involved. They don't know however if they are looking for a drunken murderer sleeping off a binge or the body of a murdered man. A vividly described flood helps to bring the mystery into clearer focus--but at the same time it threatens to make a solution impossible. "This novel is one of Upfield's major accomplishments. Bony's determined search no matter where guilt falls is fascinating. This book is Upfield at his best." --- from The Spirit of Australia by Ray Browne. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 198011580n. p. but Cleveland: Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association 1980. Staplebound. Very good . Quarto unpaginated 9pp. including content printed on front and rear wrappers. Covers age-toned else a clean un-used example of this coloring book very good or better. The images portray the friendly face of the police officer for young children. Notably while there is an illustration depicing a female police officer all children and adults appear to be white. Most of the text consists of basic safety rules such as "Don't chase the ball into the street.let it roll" and "Dont accept gifts from strangers." Produced by Cleveland's non-supervisory police union this book was clearly designed to instill a friendly image of the police force among children. The city of Cleveland's racial demographics changed faster than those of its mostly white police force and the racial tensions have ebbed and flowed ever since the 1966 shootout in Glenville. This volume not separately listed in OCLC. Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association unknown
