Édition originale très rare des premiers récits de la vie de Eugène-François Vidocq, publiée de façon chaotique chez quatre éditeurs successifs à la suite de procès et d'attaques divers, ce qui est en conformité avec la nature du personnage. Cette édition est la première en date d'une série de réécritures de cette biographie. C'est à partir de cette date, 1828, que naît véritablement le mythe littéraire immortalisé par Balzac et Victor Hugo sous les visages de Vautrin et Jean Valjean ou Javert. En effet, Vidocq fut en contact avec Victor Hugo ainsi que Alexandre Dumas et Honoré de Balzac, à la table de Happert. Forçat à la chaîne de Brest puis au bagne de Toulon dont il s évadera, Vidocq proposera ses services d indicateur à la préfecture de police pour devenir le chef de la brigade de sûreté à la fin de sa carrière. Introuvable en quatre volumes, l édition se présente ici dans une condition exceptionnelle : en demi-veau glacé romantique uniforme exempt de rousseurs.

Offered for sale uncollated with all faults. The Police Gazette was issued for each state as a confidential publication for members of the police force and officers engaged in the administration of justice. They are an invaluable source of information regarding social and family history in Victoria. 'The Victoria Police Gazette commenced in December 1853 and was distributed each week to city and rural police stations and to government offices and newspaper publishers. Its main aim was to keep the police up to date on current police affairs including recent appointments promotions and retirements. A report presented by a select committee on the state of the police of the metropolis following similar investigations from 1816 1817 and 1818 to make further inquiries on the subject. This report discussed a number of pertinent matters including the system of licensing public houses the establishment of penitentiary prisons the extent of prostitution the condition of prisons and correction houses and the state of different metropolis police establishments.An important report paving the way for the establishment of the Metropolitan Police Force in 1829. This particular copy was previously held as a reference work in the Home Office Library with stamps to the front cover and the odd page. Bound in the publisher's original wraps rebacked with card. Externally very good with light soiling and a few stamps to covers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with a few areas of scattered spotting and the odd handling mark and stamp. Very good copy in brown cloth stamped in gilt and red with gold winged figure below the title on the front board the most elaborate and most often seen binding. Both hinges tight but wear to front joint and upper left corner of front board; spine a bit worn--more so at tips--but a nice and tight copy with a large rubber stamp on front pastedown from the J. H Cool Mail Order Department No. 69 Center Ave. Captain Schaacks book was one of several to glorify the victory of law and order over anarchy and violence. Simultaneously Lucy Parsons and anarchist allies continued to publish their own reports of the arrests trial and executions as well as the anarchists speeches in court. As tempers died and facts were reviewed it began to look like a miscarriage of justice had indeed taken place. One spark that ignited the flame of truth was the revelation that Captain Michael Schaack and several of his henchman had been receiving payoffs from saloonkeepers and prostitutes stealing from those they arrested and selling the stolen goods. Even the jewelry that one of the anarchists Lingg had bequeathed to his girl friend was found in the home of one of Schaacks detectives.
