John Howard (1726-1790) was a philanthropist and the first English prison reformer. 'His detailed proposals for improvements were designed to enhance the physical and mental health of the prisoners and the security and order of the prison. His recommendations pertaining to such matters as the prison location, plan and furnishings, the provision of adequate water supply, and prisoner's diet promoted hygiene and physical health.' In 1777, Howard's sister died, leaving him L15,000 and her house. He used this inheritance and the revenue from the sale of her house to further his work on prisons. By 1784, Howard calculated that he had travelled over 42,000 miles visiting prisons. His crusade and personal example greatly influenced reformers in the U.K. and the U.S. Evans 26543. PALIB 6

However this true fifty year old shame must be revealed in the hope that mankind remembers and never allows it to be repeated." - from Foreword. "Our story tells what happened to 168 Allied Airmen who jumped into Northern Europe after their planes had met with an explosive and fiery end... Because our eventual betrayal to the Gestapo was accomplished so smoothly, a number of these encounters will be explained so that you can better understand our dilemma. The retelling of our encounter with our Gestapo hosts is mild, for many of us do not wish to recall the most unpleasant details that deserve to stay well hidden in the back of our minds... Now with this story told, we again wish to forget." - from Prologue. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Binding intact. A sound copy. Book

Fascinating criminal cases solved by the international criminal investigator, H. Ashton-Wolfe. Harry Ashton-Wolfe (1881-1959) is not generally considered a pulp author, however, stories from his books, were serialized in various pulp fiction and Sunday magazines. Ashton-Wolfe featured crimes as bizarre as those depicted by Sax Rohmer, Walter Gibson or Seabury Quinn. Nevertheless, these stories were presented as non-fiction. Ashton-Wolfe was one of the greatest liars of all times. CRIME BOX 1
