The book tells the story of the kidnapping and eventual murder of Lord and Lady Muncaster, Italian nobleman Count Alberto de Boyl and their party, in April 1870, by Greek banditti, on their way back to Athens after visiting the battlefield of Marathon. The episode severely tested the relations of the young Greek state with Britain, under Gladstone at the time, and a country that had done much to help it gain its independence from the Turkish Ottoman Empire. xv. 189p.+45 plates. map Book
