The book tells the story of the kidnapping and eventual murder of Lord and Lady Muncaster, Italian nobleman Count Alberto de Boyl and their party, in April 1870, by Greek banditti, on their way back to Athens after visiting the battlefield of Marathon. The episode severely tested the relations of the young Greek state with Britain, under Gladstone at the time, and a country that had done much to help it gain its independence from the Turkish Ottoman Empire. xv. 189p.+45 plates. map Book

12p. Printed insert "with the Compliments of Professor W. Macneile Dixon (University of Glasgow). 12mo. Original full photo printed wraps. Plain rear wrap slightly soiled. Nice copy. First edition. William Crooks (1852-1921) was an important Labour politician. Born poor in Poplar (a district near London), he began lecturing and teaching, and his open-air meetings got the name of `Crooks's College'. In 1901 he became mayor of Poplar - the first Labour mayor in London. In 1903 he was returned by a huge majority as labour M.P. for Woolwich, becoming the fourth independent Labour member in the House of Commons, holding the seat till his retirement owing to ill-health in 1921. He was active on recruiting platforms during the World War One, and was made a privy councillor in 1916. Crooks excelled as a speaker, mingling humour and pathos with immense effect. He had an unfailing fund of anecdotes, and was unequalled in his power of moving large audiences to support the causes in which he believed. This pamphlet was especially influential in rallying the common folk to the Allies cause. WWI 12
