From the dust jacket: "In 1991 Sean McPhilemy produced 'The Committee' a sensational documentary for British television that revealed that a group in Northern Ireland -- drawn from the Unionist members of the business community Protestant clergy the police RUC and the British security forces -- was systematically colluding with Loyalist terrorists to murder Irish Republicans and other Irish Nationalists. The documentary contained exclusive firsthand testimony of a member of the Loyalist committee responsible for the murders. This source provided a detailed account of how various assassinations had been planned and carried out. The broadcast of 'The Committee' resulted in highly publicized legal proceedings in the High Court in London when the British Conservative government tried unsuccessfully to force the program makers to identify their source. Since the broadcast of his documentary McPhilemy has struggled to protect his reputation in the face of various legal actions against him over the program. Harassed by British authorities and his life threatened he has brought two libel actions against newspapers in London that sought to discredit him. THE COMMITTEE gives a full account of the murder conspiracy the making of the documentary the subsequent legal proceedings and additional evidence that substantiates the original allegations. In nthe meantime the Committee alledgely continues to operate with impunity -- and Loyalist terrorists carry on the killing.". Hardcover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. "A century ago David Nunes Carvalho a renowned expert on ink handwriting and print became a central figure in some of the world’s most sensational investigations providing key information and contributing to the ultimate exoneration of the Franco-Jewish military officer Alfred Dreyfus.A review of Claire’s book in the Hartford Daily Courant provides one of the most compelling anecdotes of the legend surrounding David’s investigative powers: “It is indeed a fact that Sir Conan Doyle stated in a lecture in New York that Mr. Carvalho’s powers exceeded those given to Sherlock Holmes and were so startling that he would never dare put them into fiction! ”David seemed to have inherited his father’s spirit of innovation and experimentation. On the Frémont expedition Solomon successfully tinkered with chemicals in order to produce photographic images in subzero temperatures and exterior settings and later in life he patented a new process for water heating. Like Solomon David began his career as a photographer and when he later turned his attention to the science of ink and print he did so with a similar curiosity and determination." by Harold Heft April 1 2013 in Forward Magazine; B&W Illustrations; 296p. pages; Pictured 6/17/24 .
