1941019975Garden City New York: Crime Club Doubleday 1941. 1st American edition. Slight spine slant black boards lighly rubbed and soiled else a vefry good-near fine copy in homemade acetate dust jacket. English title: Pray Silence 1940. The 2nd Tommy Hambledon adventure. A HAYCRAFT-QUEEN CORNERSTONE SELECTION. Goebbels doesn't trust the Chief of the German Police. Hitler loves him. The British are just plain confused. Joseph Goebbels is fuming. It's the mid-1930s and the Nazi Minister of Propoganda has a nice little racket going. He and his cohorts are allowing Jews to slip out of Germany in return for 80 percent of their assets. But longtime Nazi party member Klaus Lehman the Chief of the German Police. is too much of a prig to let him get away with it. And given that Lehman was one of Hitler 's earliest supporters he's virtually untouchable. In the meantime British Intelligence is going around in circles. Someone in Germany is sending them messages in a code that hasn't been used since World War I. When it was first published in 1941 in the U.S. A Toast to Tomorrow along with its predecessor Drink to Yesterday was heralded by famed critic Anthony Boucher as "a single long and magnificent novel of drama intrigue and humor." Howard Haycraft the dean of mystery historians called the two books "superior" examples of the new wave of realistic spy-and- intrigue novels told with a "mood of subtle understatement." A current critic mystery bookseller Barbara Peters of the Poisoned Pen called it her "favorite espionage novel of all time." This darkly humorous novel was the work of two Hampshire neighbors Adelaide Oke Manning and Cyril Henry Coles and based in part on the Coles' adventures in the British Intelligence. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Book. Crime Club Doubleday

Audley title. "When an American veteran of D-Day dies in Normandy on the 40th anniversary of the invasion the event marks the opening of a chess game between the KGB and British Intelligence. In occasionally bewildering sequence the thread of the story goes from the dead American a suspected Soviet agent to a group of British men who may also be KGB. It is up to Elizabeth Loftus a neophyte in the world of espionage to ferret out the answers with the assistance of her superior David Audley whose own loyalties are suspect because he had investigated these men some 30 years earlier and found nothing suspicious." -- Publishers Weekly. He begins by offering to 'oppose anybody' in a debate that Mrs Roscoe is organising at the Society of Women Journalists. 'But you should bear in mind that the Crime Club is a purely commercial affair - run entirely by Messrs Collins the publishers of 48 Pall Mall - and I gather very privately that writers of detective stories & rival publishers are not exactly welcoming its appearance. Perhaps under the circumstances it would not be politic to have anything to do with it. For your own information Sir Godfrey Collins is its onlie begetter and I believe that the Headmaster of Eton Dr Abington is "reading" for him.' He suggests two 'good people' whom Mrs Roscoe might invite: J. J. Connington 'Victor Gollancz can put you in touch with him' and M. R. K. Burge 'writes excellent thrillers under the name of Milford Kennedy'. Straus concludes: 'If you should find somebody more violently opposed to thrillers than myself don't hesitate to let him or her 'open' the opposition & I will speak afterwards - but I am certainly at your disposal'. Typed Note: 1p. 4to. He is 'happy and honoured' to be a guest of her 'Society' on 11 October 1945. 'Is there any particular aspect of fiction or biography you would like me to speak about Or just an informal ramble about anything that comes into my head I will do whatever you say.'
