Very minor extremity e=wear. A very clean and attractive copy."Human Leopards is the name given to a criminal society whose members band together to commit murder to obtain human body parts fat and blood for the creation of a medicine Borfima thought to imbue its possessors with supernatural powers guaranteeing success in their undertakings. It was alleged that the society members concealed themselves in leopard skins and used a special three pronged knife when killing their selected victims so that the deaths would be blamed on leopards. They were also said to practise cannibalism. There were repeated reports of human leopard activity in Sherbro and Mende chiefdoms in Bonthe district in the 1890s and 1900s and the Colonial Government passed ordinances outlawing membership of this and similar societies such as Human Alligator and Human Baboon societies and set up special circuit courts to deal with offenders. A number of individuals were subsequently tried and found guilty of being involved in human leopard murders some of whom confessed to their crimes; but as with witchcraft trials in Europe it is not easy to separate the reality behind the human leopard reports from the moral panic they aroused." "Having built the reputation of his New York papers on battling the power of the corrupt political machine known as Tammany Hall it was only natural that when two Tammany-backed stock swindlers went on trial in New York the Hearst papers took a serious interest in the outcome. After the defendants Fuller and McGee were acquitted in spite of what was generally considered overwhelming evidence of guilt Hearst unleashed his attack dogs. In full spare-no-expense style the mode in which Hearst was at his most dangerous as a journalist the editor of the New York American Victor Watson ordered the papers top investigative reporter Nat Ferber to get to the bottom of the case. Ferber found exactly what Hearst had hoped for: one Eddie Eidlitz a former associate of the defense lawyer William J. Fallon who had won acquittal for the Tammany swindlers. Eidlitz was willing to testify that Fallon had participated in corrupting the jury. Thus began the sensational front-page prosecution of William Fallon." This book covers a number of the famous cases journalist Nat Ferber covered over the years including the Seabury Inquiry the E. M. Fuller and Co. Bankruptcy trial Racketeer Arnold Rothstein the Brain and more. Ferber was an investigative journalist dealing with many of the most famous criminal enterprises of his day. ; Signed by Author . 2002810
New York: HarperCollins Publishers Inc. 2002. First Edition First Printing. SIGNED by Lawrence Schiller on the title page under which the word "and" has been written and then marked through. Based on research and interviews by Lawrence Schiller and Norman Mailer the book presents a psychological portrait of FBI agent Robert P. Hanssen who sold classified information to the KGB and its successor organization over more than 20 years. Hanssen was captured in 2001 and is serving multiple life sentences in a Colorado prison. The book is written as a novel with imagined dialogue. Schiller and Mailer were unable to interview Hanssen who was already a guest of U.S. taxpayers. Nonetheless it's a fascinating attempt to get into the mind of an American traitor especially through the device of having Hanssen talk to himself while looking at a mirror. 8vo. xv 317 pages. Near Fine with a minuscule mark to the upper board's right edge and a bump to its lower right corner in a Fine dust jacket. SCARCE signed.

The backstory to this book is unusual and a bit convoluted. In Schiller's Author's Note he says he asked Mailer to write a screenplay for a CBS Television miniseries that Schiller would produce and direct. As Mailer was finishing the first draft of the screenplay Schiller decided to write the present book using Mailer's draft as the foundation. Schiller says he supplemented Mailer's draft with his own research. The book appeared in 2002 as did the series on CBS. The series starred William Hurt as Hanssen Mary-Louise Parker as his wife Peter Boyle as his father and David Strathairn as his best friend.

In addition to this book Schiller and Mailer also collaborated on "The Executioner's Song" and "Oswald's Tale."
HarperCollins Publishers Inc.
