Ahmed Vâlâ Nureddin (Vâ-Nû) born in Istanbul 1901, died in Istanbul 1967; journalist and writer; pseudonyms: Hatice Süreyya, Ali Marmara and Vâ-Nû; educated at the French-speaking Galatasaray Lyceum in Istanbul and in 1917 at the Vienna School of Economics; after his return to Turkey he became a teacher in Bolu; left for Moscow, together with Nazim Hikmet, in 1921; graduated at the Kommunisticeskij Universitet Trudjascichsja Vostoka (KUTV, Communist University of the Workers of the East) in 1925; returned to Turkey in 1928; contributed to the newspapers Aksam (Evening) and Cumhuriyet (Republic) with columns, reviews, polemics and reports; in later years, together with Rasim Us, editor of the newspaper Haber (News); author of novels and short stories (under the pseudonyms Hatice Süreyya, Ali Marmara and other names) and of `Bu Dünyadan Nazim Geçti, his reminiscences of Nazim Hikmet, published in 1965; Vâ-Nû was married to the novelist Müzehher Vâ-Nû (born in 1912). Vâ-Nû is one of the first authors of Turkish detective novel.
