460 pages including index. In 1945, the Headmaster-Designate of an Approved School suggested to the Trustees that it would be of much practical value to have an intensive study of a group of delinquents made by one who could be granted the necessary facilities by residence for a period in a School and by virtual adoption on to its staff. They were fortunate in securing the services of the author for the purpose. Mr. Stott, for four years, enjoyed the active co-operation of the Warden and the members of the permanent staff of a School whose identity it is not, for obvious reasons, possible to disclose. The present volume is the result of Mr. Stott's investigation and of his sympathetic and expert approach to the task thus entrusted to him. Unmarked. Moderate wear. Two half inch tears and some wrinkling to bottom edge of back cover. Solid copy. Book

A tight Near Fine copy in the scarce dustwrapper lightly soiled overall with a few nicks to extremities Very Good to Near Fine. Very nice copy of this classic of juvenile criminal psychology. Burt achieved great eminence during his lifetime in 1946 becoming the first British psychologist to be knighted as a reward for his research. Burt's methodologies came into question after his death however and it is now widely believed he falsified much of his data particularly that relating to the inheritance of IQ. Nonetheless the current work remains compelling for both its wealth of detailed personal case studies of British delinquents and the numerous photographic portraits which though clearly staged portray genuine subjects and are classics in their genre.
