A beautiful and delicate pedagogical collapsible globe remarkably well preserved and with its original booklet and slipcase. Apparently unrecorded in Australian collections. Il joue un rôle important lors des deux guerres mondiales.Bras droit du maréchal Foch à la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale il est notamment chargé le 11 novembre 1918 de lire les conditions de l'armistice à Rethondes à la délégation allemande.Nommé le 17 mai 1940 par le président du Conseil Paul Reynaud commandant en chef de l'armée française en remplacement du général Gamelin il ne peut pas empêcher la défaite lors de la bataille de France. Il est alors le premier à se déclarer partisan d'un armistice comme lors de la Première Guerre mondiale avec l'Allemagne alors que le président du Conseil et d'autres membres du gouvernement sont partisans d'abandonner le territoire métropolitain et de poursuivre la lutte depuis l'Afrique du Nord avec les Britanniques.Le 17 juin 1940 il devient ministre de la Guerre du gouvernement Pétain prépare l'armistice signé le 22 juin puis participe durant deux mois au gouvernement de Vichy avant d'être nommé le 4 septembre délégué général pour l'Afrique du Nord où il crée et organise l'armée d'Afrique en relation avec les services américains et britanniques. Rappelé et relevé par Pétain de son commandement en novembre 1941 sous la pression allemande il est assigné à résidence dans une villa en Provence.
