O Abade de Vertrot 1655-1735 membro da Academia das Inscrições escreveu esta obra em 1690 tendo obtido um sucesso que o conduziu à elaboração de outras análises histórias no entanto o seu talento foi essencialmente de natureza literária. Segundo Gastão de Melo e Matos afirma na nova tradução e impressão de 1945; foi com a Restauração que Portugal se tornou conhecido do europeu médio da época pois Portugal não constituia um factor político na Europa e foram pelas acções dirigidas contra o rei de Espanha que também esta obra de Vertot alcançou fama.</p> M-3-B-26 unknown

Internally the top margin of the ffep has been excised otherwise remains complete with the text-block bright clean and unmarked with secure sound binding. The leather binding has recently been professionally replenished and treated with a natural leather preserver. Scarce; no copies of this edition and by this printer available in commerce at time of cataloguing. A handsome presentation; very good. Published with the initials M. B. - a Benedictine Monk which refer to its author Friar Mateus da Assunção Brandão.</p>_x000d_<p>Inocêncio mentions the existence of a two-volume translation published in 1783 Lisbon Offic. de José de Aquino Bulhões by Vicente Carlos de Oliveira a well-known poet and translator at the time and author of several poems and translations. In other words Inocêncio saw a third loose volume belonging to this three-volume edition and mistakenly thought it was a complement to the 1783 edition when they were different editions and translations the second being by Friar Mateus da Assunção Brandão. Only Inocêncio's continuator Brito Aranha in volume XVII of the Dictionary correctly attributed the authorship of the translation.</p>_x000d_<p>Work consisting of a preliminary speech and fourteen chapters which describes the history of the Roman Republic from its foundation after the overthrow of the Monarchy to its end with the rise to power of Julius Caesar.</p>_x000d_<p>All volumes include subject indexes and the last one contains a memoir by Lord Stanhope on the composition of the Roman Senate and the author's response.</p>_x000d_<p>René Aubert de Vertot Bennetot Castle 1655 - Paris 1735 French ecclesiastic and historian. After studying with the Jesuits at the College of Rouen he joined the Franciscan Capuchin Order which he left for health reasons. He then joined the Premonstratensian Order where he served as secretary to the General of the Order and was appointed Prior of Joyenval. B. - um Monge Beneditino que se referem ao seu autor Frei Mateus da Assunção Brandão.</p>_x000d_<p>Inocêncio refere a existência de uma tradução em dois volumes publicados em 1783 Lisboa na Offic. de José de Aquino Bulhões da autoria de Vicente Carlos de Oliveira poeta e tradutor muito conhecido na época e autor de diversos poemas e traduções. O mesmo Inocêncio afirma que foi publicado um terceiro volume em que a tradução é da autoria de M. B. ou seja Inocêncio viu um terceiro volume solto pertencente a esta edição em três volumes e pensou erradamente que seria o complemento da edição de 1783 quando se trata de edições e traduções diferentes sendo a segunda de Frei Mateus da Assunção Brandão. Só o continuador de Inocêncio Brito Aranha no volume XVII do Dicionário fez a atribuição correcta da autoria da tradução.</p>_x000d_<p>Obra composta por um discurso preliminar e catorze capítulos que descreve a história da República Romana desde a sua fundação após derrubada a Monarquia até ao seu fim com a subida ao poder de Júlio César.</p>_x000d_<p>Todos os volumes incluem índices de assuntos e o último contém uma memória de Lord Stanhope sobre a composição do Senado Romano e a resposta do autor.</p>_x000d_<p>René Aubert de Vertot Castelo Bennetot 1655 - Paris 1735 Eclesiástico francês e historiador. Após estudar com os jesuítas no Colégio de Rouen ingressou na Ordem Franciscana dos Capuchinhos donde saiu por motivos de saúde. A seguir ingressou na Ordem Premonstratense onde exerceu as funções de secretário do Geral da Ordem e foi nomeado Prior de Joyenval. Expulsando os representantes do rei Filipe IV de Espanha cuja família reinava nos dois países desde 1580 e garantindo a independência de Portugal.</p>_x000d_<p>Publicada pela primeira vez em 1689 a obra revelou-se um enorme sucesso editorial com mais de 35 edições em menos de um século publicada em diversas línguas e países. Segundo Gastão de Melo e Matos na nova tradução e impressão de 1945 foi com a Restauração que Portugal se tornou conhecido do europeu médio da época pois Portugal não constituía um factor político na Europa; e foram pelas acções dirigidas contra o rei de Espanha que esta obra alcançou fama.
