Slightly worn contemporary half calf spines with raised bands and with black and gilt labels marbled boards and edges. Five volumes small tear at head of volume four. From the library of Fredrik von Friesendorff with his bookplate. Thake HM-076. According to Thake this is the first pirated edition with a fake imprint and is probably printed in the French Provinces. It’s an edition without illustrations. First published in 1726 Vertot’s history on the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem commonly known as the Knights Hospitaller and later Knights of Rhodes and Knights of Malta was a huge succes. It displays an heroic struggle between the Christians led by the frenchmen and the Infidels. The papacy however was treated with no respect and it was immidiately condemned by the Order of Malta and put on the Index in Rome of forbidden books in 1728. The fifth part contains a chapter with â€Discours sur l’Alcoran†pp 382-416. hardcover
