A scarce work translated from the French of the Abbot Vertat by J Mitchel. Illustrated with a folding map. The Abbot Vertat as stated to this title page is also known as the Abbot Vertot. Rene-Aubert Vertot was a French clergyman and historian. Vertot was a pupil of the Jesuit Fathers seminary at Rouen which he left at the end of two years to enter the Capuchin Order. His first historical work was his 'Histoire de la Conjuration de Portugal'. As this work was received favourably he endeavored to write this work instead. 'Histoire des Revolutions de Suede was first published in 1695 and the first English translation appeared soon after. This is the second English edition of this work. Vertot also wrote a history on the History of the Knights Hospitallers. This work is complete with a folding map of Sweden Denmark and Norway. Rebound in a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Tidemark to the title page and to the first fifteen pages only affecting the page edges. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots. Very Good Indeed A Swall and T Child hardcover

Engraved frontispiece depicting the genealogical tree of the Portugese royal family with a resting "Emanuel XIV D. of Portugal" beneath. Features an approving statement by the l'Abbé Richard who praises de Verto and his work for "the beauty of his narration the purity of his style the reality of his facts the solidity of his proofs by which they are confirmed and every where conspicuous". High praise indeed. Leather extremities are lightly rubbed some scuffing as is to be expected of a volume of this age; slight bow to the front board. Internally the top margin of the ffep has been excised otherwise remains complete with the text-block bright clean and unmarked with secure sound binding. The leather binding has recently been professionally replenished and treated with a natural leather preserver. Scarce; no copies of this edition and by this printer available in commerce at time of cataloguing. A handsome presentation; very good.
