The book was praised as much for the language in which it was written as for its historical merit. On publication Madame de Sévigné wrote 'Nous avons lu avec mon fils la Conjuration de Portugal qui est fort belle'. O tema principal é o da Revolução de 1640 e as manobras da sua preparação em segredo. O Abade de Vertrot 1655-1735 membro da Academia das Inscrições escreveu esta obra em 1690 tendo obtido um sucesso que o conduziu à elaboração de outras análises histórias no entanto o seu talento foi essencialmente de natureza literária.
