11594New York: Original Artwork c.1984. Acrylic and ink on a denim Wrangler jacket size 40. Painted circa 1984. Large "JoyStick" piece with character portrait and smaller "Revolt" piece underneath to rear jacket panel. A classic Dr. Revolt burner with character portrait of Joy "Joystick" Bouldin. Authentic hand painted clothing from the early days of hip hop are exceptionally rare. Revolt began painting on New York subway trains in the late 1970s and continued throughout the 1980s. As a member of the RTW Rolling Thunder Writers he painted with artists such as IZ THE WIZ ZEPHYR QUIK and KEL. He appeared in the historic PBS documentary "Style Wars" and along with Zephyr created the iconic "WILD STYLE" mural used in the film of the same name. Revolt has never stopped painting and his work is held in museums galleries and private collections worldwide. He has been in commercial demand since the 1980s designing album covers for artists such as The Fun Lovin' Criminals and Grandmaster Flash and creating the classic "YO! MTV Raps" logo. Provenance: Joy "Joystick" Bouldin. Joy was a key figure in the New York club scene of the early 1980s. Aged 18 she arrived in New York and eschewing her plans to go to college found work at the Mudd Club. Here she was befriended by Andy Warhol who introduced her to his inner circle including Jean-Michel Basquiat for whom she modelled and Keith Haring. In 1982 she quit her job in a law firm to "work the elevator" at Danceteria. Deciding who to let in to the private club gave her a key position at the forefront of the emerging culture of the time positioned at the intersection between fashion Pop Art Hip Hop and graffiti. Like key door-people everywhere Joy knew everyone and everyone knew her. She came up with the idea of having the best known and most applauded graffiti writers pop artists and musicians tag or draw on her clothing as they came in and out of the club. In doing so she created a wearable original artwork merging fashion art and music that now also serves as a significant historical document. In true graffiti spirit the writers wanted to be seen and learning of Joy's legendary art coats were keen to have their name displayed at the hottest club in town. As a result Joy was gifted items of hand-painted clothing in the hope she would wear them out. This jacket by Revolt was once such item that she loved and wore regularly. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 103 p., b/w plates (19 unnumbered b/w plates and 1 map). First edition of this extremely rare first-hand and historically significant eyewitness account of the Syrian and the Suez Canal Operations during the Great War by an Ottoman soldier and statesman. Erden describes in this book his return to Istanbul after his military attaché duty in Paris and his departure to Damascus to join the 4th Army in Syria under the command of Cemal Pasha (1872-1922). He then discusses the Arab Revolt in Hejaz and its possible effects on the Ottoman Empire (The Arab Uprising was initiated by Sharif Hussein bin Ali in June 1916 during the Great War with the aim of creating an independent and united Arab state comprising of Aden in Yemen and Aleppo in Syria against the Imperial Ottoman). After disclosing his views and the actions of the army in the region, he goes on to describe Jerusalem, the Suez Canal, and the wars that took place there. Erden gave new information on the reasons and results of the Canal operation, the condition of the Turkish army along Palestine and Syria fronts, the relations among the Turkish staff, and the nature of the Arab revolt through his views and observations in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria fronts accumulated as he was Cemal Pasha's chief of staff. Erden was a Turkish soldier and war historian. Very Good French Original leaflet on a folded bifolium. Size: 20 x 16 cm; open size: 20 x 32 cm. In French. [3] p. Slight foxing and stains on paper, some chippings on folded traces and extremities. Overall a good copy. This extremely rare proclamation on the Patrona Halil Rebellion and the fire following the rebellion in 1730 within the Ottoman Empire, written to those living in France, especially Paris residents, was approved by Herault on 21 November 1730. The Patrona Halil Rebellion was a social uprising within the Ottoman Empire, which ended the so-called Tulip period and catapulted Sultan Mahmud I to the throne. The rule of this Sultan and the time until the 1760s was the last period of stability for the Ottoman Empire, as evidenced by the Belgrade Peace Treaty. The Ottoman Empire did not participate in the Seven Years' War, but the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774) destabilized it so that it could never again regain its previous stability. This printed rare leaflet details how this revolt started, and what its causes and consequences were. It is stated that the number of people who participated in this revolt, which was aggravated with the Janissaries not getting their salaries for an extended period of time, reached 100,000, the grand vizier and his grooms were strangled, and many people including officials and civilians died during the events. It is also stated that the news about the events in Istanbul was confirmed by Prince Alexander of Wirttemberg, who came from Vienna to Belgrade. Only one copy is located in Bibliotheque Nationale de France in OCLC: 460213436. Women in Revolt 1971 documents a significant work of underground cinema engaging transgender identity performance and feminist discourse within the context of Warhol's Factory productions. Produced by Andy Warhol and directed by Paul Morrissey the film features prominent transgender performers including Candy Darling Jackie Curtis and Holly Woodlawn. The film engages themes of gender identity performance and social marginalization through satire supporting research into LGBTQ film history avant-garde cinema and the intersection of queer culture with feminist movements of the early 1970s.<br /> <br /> Archive of 3 original vintage silver gelatin photographs used as lobby display materials each measuring approximately 10 x 8 inches in black and white. Two photographs feature Candy Darling in stylized portrait-like scenes including one in which she sits on a couch wearing pronounced makeup and gazing into the distance and another in which she appears adorned with a pearl necklace emphasizing glamour and constructed femininity. The third photograph depicts Holly Woodlawn reclining alongside Martin Kove presenting a staged domestic or intimate setting. The images foreground costume pose and expression reflecting the film's engagement with identity as performance and the visual language of Warhol's cinematic productions.<br /> <br /> Produced during a period of expanding queer visibility in underground film following the late 1960s Women in Revolt situates transgender performers at the center of its narrative marking a departure from marginal or coded representation in mainstream media. Its satirical treatment of the Women's Liberation Movement reflects tensions and intersections between feminist and queer discourses of the period while also documenting the lived realities and artistic contributions of Warhol's collaborators. These photographs provide material evidence of how such themes were visually presented within alternative film circuits. 56 pages including footnotes and advertisements. Includes several pertinent cartoons from Vancouver newspapers of the early 1900s. "In the course of preliminary research (of the Komagata Maru incident in 1914) I discovered a true Canadian hero, William Hopkinson, an immigration inspector in Vancouver, who conducted undercover operations among Indian immigrants. It was his intelligence briefings and advice that helped stiffen the backbone of the government in dealing with the shipload of illegals. In preparation for C-FAR's rally in Vancouver to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Hopkinson's assassination by a Sikh extremist, I asked Robert Jarvis to research the Vancouver archives on Hopkinson and the events surrounding the Komagata Maru. His investigations let to this booklet. He quickly found that the strong opposition - by politicians and labour - to the Komagata Maru could be traced back to the activitiess of the Asiatic Exclusion Leage, formed some eight years before. What Mr. Jarvis has found is a long ignored and misreported chapter in Canadian history." - Paul Fromm, from Introduction. Unmarked. Light wear. Nice copy. Book
