Very Good French Original leaflet on a folded bifolium. Size: 20 x 16 cm; open size: 20 x 32 cm. In French. [3] p. Slight foxing and stains on paper, some chippings on folded traces and extremities. Overall a good copy. This extremely rare proclamation on the Patrona Halil Rebellion and the fire following the rebellion in 1730 within the Ottoman Empire, written to those living in France, especially Paris residents, was approved by Herault on 21 November 1730. The Patrona Halil Rebellion was a social uprising within the Ottoman Empire, which ended the so-called Tulip period and catapulted Sultan Mahmud I to the throne. The rule of this Sultan and the time until the 1760s was the last period of stability for the Ottoman Empire, as evidenced by the Belgrade Peace Treaty. The Ottoman Empire did not participate in the Seven Years' War, but the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774) destabilized it so that it could never again regain its previous stability. This printed rare leaflet details how this revolt started, and what its causes and consequences were. It is stated that the number of people who participated in this revolt, which was aggravated with the Janissaries not getting their salaries for an extended period of time, reached 100,000, the grand vizier and his grooms were strangled, and many people including officials and civilians died during the events. It is also stated that the news about the events in Istanbul was confirmed by Prince Alexander of Wirttemberg, who came from Vienna to Belgrade. Only one copy is located in Bibliotheque Nationale de France in OCLC: 460213436.
