77937Small archive of genealogical material associated with Archibald Leard Taylor 1853-1946 largely compiled by his wife Fannie Elizabeth Taylor née Hawley 1855-1936. An announcement in the Oakland Tribune on June 29 1917 concerning the marriage of their daughter Elva notes “Until a few years ago the Taylors made their home in the East Oakland district where they were numbered with the earlier pioneers.â€<br /> <br /> Born in Salzburg Pennsylvania Archibald Leard Taylor travelled to California around 1878 with his brother Dr. William Stewart Taylor 1847-1931. According to a manuscript biography in Fannie Taylor’s hand he was employed as a salesman “in the country districts†while also studying theology with an interest in pursuing missionary work in China. This passage is followed by a lively account of his pursuit of permanent work in San Francisco which resulted in a position with W.J. Garrett’s Machine Works Brass and Bell Foundry at the corner of Fremont and Natoma streets. While he remained active in the Presbyterian Church the field of engineering provided him with steady employment including as the secretary and treasurer of a crane foundry and as an agent for a high temperature supplies company.<br /> <br /> Alexander and Fannie were married in San Francisco on May 4 1882. Their union resulted in six children including a daughter who died at age two. The couple resided in Oakland Ward 7 until around 1920 when they moved to Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County to pursue stock farming with Alexander’s sister Mary Margaret Taylor 1852-1925. No account of the success of this endeavor could be found and by 1930 Alexander and Fannie had established a retirement home in San Leandro California.<br /> <br /> Compiled by Fannie with the assistance of relatives genealogical societies and other sources this collection of material includes documentation that establishes a connection with Zachary Taylor the 12th president of the United States. Notably it also includes a family hair album with 37 locks of hair from various individuals in the Taylor and Hawley families. All the locks are stitched in place and labeled with the contributor’s name. A few are described as being collected on the day of or after the individual’s death.<br /> <br /> This archive includes:<br /> <br /> "Taylor Ancestry of Archibald Leard Taylor. Although the name of the compiler is not stated on the title page a short paragraph on page 99 states 'William the Second Lord Bagot and Compiler of these Memorials.' The volume is inscribed on a preliminary page to Henry Eyers Landor Esq and dated Blithfield January 1827. There is also a signature of Lord Bagot on the reverse of the linen back hand coloured engraving bound in at page 74. Charles Byron Haight 1835-1895 is buried in the Cold Spring Cemetery but no Maloy's are found in any of the Cold Spring cemeteries.<br /> <br /> One note dating 1862 written to a Meloy asking for chestnut fence railings signed by AM Baxter . The end paper has a note in an early hand stating the foredge is of "St. Albans Abbey" with the surrounding district. The original owners name has been crossed out but the last pages of the book include record the births and deaths of the Osmond Family of Hungerford. <br /> <br /> 8vo 568pp. Printed in a large and attractive type on laid paper marbled endpapers. A little light soiling thumbing on the first few pages on the lower right corner but the whole in very clean without foxing. Period full black calf gilt tooled binding marbled end papers gilt inner and outer dentelles all edges gilt. Housed in a later cloth slip case. Spine a touch dry the binding is tight yet opens comfortably. <br /> <br /> ESTC T166750 - No pagination provided ; 8° the final leaf = Ll4. 8vo 21 cm 568p. Publications of the Harleian Society Volumes 23 24 25 26 33 34 30 and 31 respectively. The last four volumes cover the periods 1660-68 1669-79 1679-87 and 1687-94 respectively; the seeming overlap with the contents of the first-mentioned volume above Volume 23 is explained in a prefatory note: Volumes 33 and 34 'contain the Marriage Licences issued by the Vicar-General of the Archbishop of Canterbury between the 25th day of July 1660 and the 15th day of July 1679 which were omitted' in Volume 23.
