I haven't found any indication that this work was ever published in a finished form which is strange condsidering the amount of information here. Taking the 1850 census the authors appear to have tracked down as much information as possible on each person listed. Included are various pieces of ephemera related to the work. Hardcovers bound in 3/4 dark brown leather and burgundy cloth-covered boards. The leather is worn and dry and rubs easily off at the touch. The outer rear hinge of Volume I is cracking but the inner hinges are reinforced with cloth as published so that the bindings are still fairly sound. Outer edges of the text blocks are foxed. The text is generally clean. Volume I contains the history and contains several pages of photos of buildings and scenes about the county and Ames Iowa.
