Original full brown leather lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt and blind dentiilled nner edges with decorative endpapers text block edged in gilt. 1st ed. 999 pp. illus. w/ many engraved portraits. Leather shows modest surface rubbing rubbed joints. Loss at head of spine panel to 1" vertical crack in leather running length of panel but with virtually no loss. Both joints appear to have been mended at some point and are weak but currently functional and inner hinges are intact but we cannot guarantee the long-term stability of the joints. Leather shows thin strip of loss at heel of spine and is chipped but intact at head of spine; joints show some rubbing and a hint of separation at corners. Overall leather remains dark and supple with few surface marks modest rubbing along bottom edge. Former owner book plate on front pastedown. 999 pp. illus. w/ numerous b&w portrait plates. Interior is quite clean and fully intact showing only minor scattered soiling. A lovely binding quite decently preserved. Original edition not a modern era reprint. Scarce. Chapman Publishing Co.
