Vanderlip 1864-1937 Assistant Secretary of the Treasury 1897 to 1901; President of National City Bank Citibank 1909 to 1919. Vanderlip played a key role in the creation of the Federal Reserve System. In 1906 it was Vanderlip who convinced many in New York's banking establishment that a banker-controlled central bank would serve their financial interests. Vanderlip and the chiefs of many of America's major corporations and banks met in 1910 at the Jekyll Island conference. Traveling anonymously the group left secretly by rail from Hoboken New Jersey before congregating at a hunting lodge. Although a system of twelve regional banks was designed the regional concept was a ruse to keep the public from thinking that the Federal Reserve would be controlled from New York. In 1935 Vanderlip wrote in the Saturday Evening Post: "I do not feel it is any exaggeration to speak of our secret expedition to Jekyll Island as the occasion of the actual conception of what eventually became the Federal Reserve System." Vanderlip is also credited with the famous quotation: "A conservative is a man who does not think that anything should be done for the first time." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover.
