Map of River Corridors on front endpapers.; map of Prince George County in pock on back pastedown . 201 pages. This volume--the second in a series by Mrs. Foley designed to identify the earliest settlers of Virginia--will assist the researcher in locating colonial and immigrant ancestors in Charles City County and in that part of Charles City County south of the James River from which Prince George County was formed in 1703. To this end Mrs. Foley abstracted the land records from the fourteen volumes of Patent Books for the hundred-year period 1632-1732 extracting all data falling within the focus of her project. Thus the main body of the text consists of a chronological series of abstracts giving the name of the Charles City County or Prince George County patentee the location and acreage of the patent and the date of settlement with references to family members and owners of adjoining properties and most important the names of the thousands of settlers brought over as headrights. . These records are unique because the frontiersman who settled in this geographical location next to Indians lands seldom had the opportunity to record his legal records until the end of the American Revolution when county courthouses were established. Therefore many of the early deeds contain chains of titles from the original colonial land owner to the present owner at the time of the recording. They also contain many types of instructions such as conveyances of land marriage contracts wills sheriff's sales deeds of gifts plats or surveys a facsimile of same is included in these abstracts bills of sale mortgages affidavits powers of attorney slave sales and others. The deeds often reveal additional information such as geographical locations residence adjoining neighbors occupation and heir ships as widows sons daughters and their husbands brothers sisters and uncles and sometimes the death date of the former property owner. An appendix section of South Carolina Colonial and State Land and Probate Laws is included to aid the student of genealogy and history. . Southern Historical Press hardcover
