Approximately 10000 notified desertions and other absences by seamen during the period 1852-1900. Notices taken from the New South Wales Government Gazette and the New South Wales Police Gazette. Most named were straightforward deserters though a small minority were described as stragglers strays and absentees or as being AWOL. Up to 1864 all desertions reported occurred in NSW mainly Port Jackson but from 1864 notices of Victorian desertions began to appear with other colonies and New Zealand and Fiji following. A hand written note on Donald Lines Jacobus letterhead addressed "Dear Minot" is laid inside next to page 97. A two page hand wriiten letter by Edna M. Agan is found between pages 150-151. A small typed note from Julia DeLong dated April 15 1959 found with the letter. The typed noted states Mr. Snyder thinks Mr. Pitman would be interested on the additional information. Previous owner inscription on the right front flyleaf. Pencil note written upper front paste down. Interior contents clean except for page 97. H. Minot Pitman hardcover

Covers are wrinkled and creased with closed edge tears. Light insect damage on the spine. Several notes written on the front cover. <br /> <br /> The compiler expresses her appreciation for the help she received in putting this family genealogy together on page 93. Her signature is at the end of her statement. Inscription on front cover in blue pen reads; "Given to Eloise Norris by Nellie Marshall Patterson Aug 1958." Norris writes her own notes on the front cover. <br /> <br /> According to the first paragraph on page 1 "Thomas Marshall lived and owned land somewhere near Earlysville Va. or it may have been nearer Free Union.Thomas Marshall's will is recorded in Albemarle County." Uncertain of the birth date for Thomas Marshall or who his parents were but the author does provide the location for his 1849 will in Albemarle County. Several names dates locations etc. provided for the Marshall family. Mrs. Obadiah Bass unknown

The descendants and families of the following are traced up to about the year 2000. Includes and extensive number of portraits and family pictures and a name index. In the first section the descendants are traced from George Miller b. circa 1750 Pennsylvania who settled and married near the village of Crocus Adair County Kentucky. This family spread out broadly across the United States with some in Jasper County Iowa; Kansas as well as many other places. The second section traces descendants from Valentin Ritter b. 1823 Bernstett Alsace who migrated to Perth County Ontario Canada.
